I don't know what to tell you Dabs. Yes, Wilson is a pretty good pitcher, is it worth the risk though to not sign Fielder and then have Wilson sign with the Red Sox or Yankees?

The post before this is the first time you actually gave real reasons why Fielder is the better signing. Fielder is the better player. I am not disputing that. The issue I raised is that adding Fielder would be adding a great player to a position where the Cubs were getting at least average production. Adding Wilson would be adding a good player to a position where the Cubs were getting terrible production. I understand the value of getting the best available player, but don't call me an idiot for thinking that we are better off adding a player that isn't as good as another but is at a position of higher need.

I think they will anyway. Whatever, it's not my money  They can probably do this smartly to be halfway respectable in 2012 and compete by 2013. That assumes they have a plan.

I hope so too. I am not sure that they do, but I am hopeful that a guy that is as smart as Ricketts would have some semblance of plan.

I highly doubt this.

Nor should it be the case if the team is paying his salary and getting nothing in return, e.g. releasing him. As bad as Soriano has been this year, here is his line against lefties .291/.333/.557. He could be useful in a platoon with Colvin next season.

They probably try to foist him on an AL team. Some of the prospects coming up like Brett Jackson are outfielders so clearing out a spot by dumping Soriano isn't out of the realm of possibility.

I agree that they, and everyone else who follows the Cubs, would love to get anything for Soriano, but I have a hard time believing that it would be in the best interest of the team to just release him is all I have been arguing.

I think releasing him is going to be a last resort. They'll probably try to deal him in the offseason to an American League team. They'll keep him as long as they can, hoping for a deal. Then when the money is more eatable, they'll dump him. I don't think it'll be an immediate thing. Although if they dumped him tomorrow, it's not going to make much difference other than that they're going to be paying him to play somewhere else. They have to pay him anyway. The issue is whether you think he's still producing positive value, and whether that positive value is enough to keep another guy from playing left field. I think he still has positive value but I'm probably in the minority. I also know it's not my money and since it's money already spent, plus the fact that his value is probably marginal at best, they probably have done their own calculations (however faulty their calculation methods may be) and will decide one way or another in the offseason. I like Soriano but I don't really care if he's on the team next year or not, as he's not likely to have any bounceback but he's not completely useless yet either.

If we had a left fielder waiting in the wings I might be okay with releasing him but we dont.

Plain and simple he is still our best option for LF.

Campana is the better option.

What evidence is there about that? Because he is fast? Come on man, I know Soriano is a disappointment given the price tag, but he offers more offensively than Campana does at this point.

All things being equal, if you have guys who have near- or sub-.300 OBPs, you should probably play the guy who can actually hit one over the wall every now and then.

I don't know what will happen with Soriano come next season, but he's not completely useless yet.

I wouldn't mind Campana getting the start tomorrow against Arroyo given Soriano's terrible numbers against him, but given a choice between a .700 OPS player and a .600 OPS player I am going to take the .700 as the main starter.
