Who buys the tickets? Who buys the Jerseys? Who buys every other piece of Cubs memorabilia?
Who sells more jerseys? Fielder
Who sells more tickets? Fielder
Who brings more excitment? Fielder
Who is C.J WIlson? IDK

Google may solve your ills.

But dabynsky's point is one to pay attention to...most Cubs fans are casual and don't think of baseball the right way, so who cares what fans think when you're building a team? If that team starts winning, and Darwin Barney starts hitting 25 HR because he's awesome despite what the fans think (fake example), you can bet Darwin Barney starts selling more jerseys and more fans start filling the seats. Winning > what fans think. Because winning will draw fans to the field, especially Wrigley Field.*

*Note: winning does not work for Tropicana Field.

So your argument is that you don't know who CJ Wilson is therefore they ought to get Fielder?

Let me ask you this which one of those questions you asked actually affects on the field results? What I have said is that if I can only get 1 big time 15 million or more free agent signing then CJ Wilson is the guy I want. You have yet to raise a single point or issue that says adding Fielder and leaving the pitching alone will raise the win total of this team more than adding Wilson alone and leaving the lineup alone.

I think if you're going to spend that much for a pitcher you don't want him to be your 4/5 starter, you want him as a #3 guy to push either Dempster or Z to the #4 spot.

What do you think a pitcher like that is going to cost? I am guessing it is going to be pretty close to that 15 million range. The names D3A threw out weere Mark Buehrle (making 14 million this year), Chris Carpenter (making 15 million this year) and Edwin Jackson (making 8.5 million). Given the market for starting pitching they are all probably going to be in the 12+ million range. The difference in cost between these guys and CJ Wilson is likely going to be 5 million or less. What do you guys think the difference in salary between Pena and Fielder is going to be next year?

Oh, I don't want Fielder either. I want a rebuild. Hehehe. Your point is well taken, but I think they need to convince CC Sabathia to become a Cub in addition to signing a guy like CJ Wilson.

My semi-realistic dream plan is to get Wilson this offseason, and then next offseason when Dempster and Z are off the books to get a guy like Matt Cain. Cain, Wilson, Garza would be a pretty formidable front 3 that can carry a bad lineup.

I can appreciate a plan like that, but I'd rather have a "Yankees build a badass team" plan than a "spackle here and superglue there" plan. I feel like you need to build a team where the rotation can pick up the lineup one day and the lineup can reciprocate another day, but 50% of the time, both sides dominate and blow out the other team :D

I can appreciate that but I think you can build a good enough lineup to win with smart small pickups and the talent we have coming through the pipelines. Ideally we can afford both a big time pitcher and an impact bat like Fielder. I just think that given the choice between one or the other pitching has to take priority.

And while I understand your point are we really calling pitchers like CJ Wilson and Matt Cain spackle or superglue?

No, they're not the spackle and superglue (although Cain is an extreme flyball pitcher, but Garza was too and then he mutated or something so that probably doesn't matter). I was referring more to our offensively-challenged lineup.

tire patching wont work.

Seemed to work for the Giants last year.

Look we all agree that getting the most on the Cubs roster is the best and most likely way to win a World Series which is the ultimate goal. The only question is how to go about it with limited resources (money, time, etc.). The idea I put forward is that if the Cubs want to get the most immediate improvements the focus should be on offense. Rice Cube and a few others have been putting forward the complete blowup rebuild plan. There is merit to each, but I have yet to see why the plan I am putting forward can't work.

Right. Because that's what I said. I have never ever ever said soriano is even a good defender.

bull.shit.

http://www.chicitysports.com/forum/chicago-cubs-forum/14126-alfonso-sorianos-endless-contract-3.html

page 3,captain obvious post 8:57 PM on june 15th

"Soriano was a pretty awesome defender in LFer in 2007. He was REALLY good. "

9:15 PM the same day:

"Soriano isn't a great fielder because he plays LF. LFers suck. He was great because in comparison to other LFers he was really awesome. That's where he gets his value. "

Did I say the Cubs pitchers were as good as the Giants? Haven't I been arguing that the Cubs need to improve starting pitching for over a month now?

considering CO didnt add a lot of context to his post...why cant i conclude that he means Soriano's defense throughout his career?

Not sure how you can deduct that from his statement. He clearly states 2007.

Most people would agree with him.

soriano has never been a great defender imo....but we've had this argument 6 billion times..so i'd rather not get into it

i can deduct that because he didnt specifically say "i have never said soriano is currently a great defender"

obviously most people would take his generic statement as him talking about the present..but he wasnt really specific...

NO I don't know who C.J. Wilson is. Yes I know who he is. He is not an ace. He is not going to drastically change the face of the franchise. He is not going to sell tickets.
