And that is what makes Jackson promising. If he didn't do everything else well he wouldn't be a top 50 prospect. Hopefully he maxes out that potential, but I fear that his ceiling might not be that impact level player we really need him to be.

I think he'll be useful, but it's really hard to be a superstar in MLB. That's why there are so few of them.

Cubs ended up outslugging Travis Wood's fail unless Trever Miller decides to shit the bed right now.

Oh there certainly is value in having a league average or slightly better position player for league minimum for a few seasons. Just was commenting that the Cubs really need their few blue chip guys (which Jackson is one of) to really max out for this approach to really work.

I think they'll probably draft more of those guys over the next couple years. It'll take a bit but this approach may pan out. As with a lot of things in baseball you're going to have to hope for some good luck.

If the approach is waiting for those guys to pan out then this rebuild is a lot longer than even the pessinists are predicting. Looking I am not saying Jackson has to be a stud for things to work the Cubs. I am just saying that for this to happen with Starlin Castro as a building block you really have to hit on the guys that are close to the majors. That doesn't mean that the Cubs are doomed forever if it doesn't happen. It just means that if we are waiting on drafting more of these guys that Castro will be moving into that short term asset category as opposed to the long term asset he is now.

Still getting used to hearing people talk about a pitcher named Wood on the Cubs and not referring to Kerry.

I agree that it does take some getting used to especially consider since they are nearly the mirror opposite in terms of pitchers (hard throwing righty, or at least was, to a soft tossing lefty).

Hopefully Kerry will be the only guy on the Cubs named Wood. Oh how we'll miss Marshall.

I think Brett Jackson will probably become the best outfielder in this current iteration of Cubs. I also think they have to hope not just for the two or three "home run" guys but also build organizational depth. Of course, you could have a great crop of impact guys and then watch them all get hurt one by one...where have I seen that before...

*sad*

I guess I am not worried about organizational depth because we are already seeing it. Guys like Darwin Barney, Steve Clevenger and Wellington Castillo are all good examples of depth, and there are quite a few guys like them in the system already. The Cubs lack those impact players and I just worry that if Jackson isn't special it means that Castro and Rizzo have to become that much better for this wave to form a nucleus to build off. If that doesn't happen then Castro starts moving into Garza territory of possibly being better off trading him which I don't want to see.

What I meant is that it'd be easier to field a MLB team and not have to hedge your bets on just one or two guys coming up if you had the kind of depth where if one guy goes down, an above-average guy is ready to step in for a while and you won't lose that much in terms of production. Obviously this is easier said than done. While the Cubs have a lot of depth with regards to league average guys who don't completely suck, they don't have the above-average type depth that are the stuff dreams are made of.

Slightly better split squad: Dempster vs. Neftali Feliz (Rangers)

Not as good split squad: Rodrigo Lopez vs. Brandon McCarthy (A's)

"Good" split squad can't solve Neftali Feliz in first inning.

"Not so good" split squad puts a two-spot on the board.

Campana has a couple line drive hits today. Guess he doesn't want to lose his job.

Travis Wood's spring struggles continue - Chicago Cubs Blog - ESPN Chicago

Cubs guys don't sound as worried as I think they should. Seems T. Wood is having good bullpen sessions and has some good stuff but just lacks consistency. Maybe they'll have him work on that in AAA.

i would like to see him work in the minors..and also maybe get his feet wet in the pen and work from there

i think he can be utilized in certain situations as a relief pitcher, even after he gets fully assimilated into the rotation
