Well I was right about Wells being sent to Iowa. I had gotten talked out of it by everyone else, but as usual teams like to keep as many guys as possible. Sending Wells down allows the Cubs to keep another guy that doesn't have options or Rule 5 pick Castillo.

Perhaps you know as I've gotten conflicting opinions from others, but does Wells have to clear waivers to be optioned to Iowa?

I am not sure either. I know he had an option still, but I am not sure if he had to pass waivers or not. I've read that he had to pass through waivers to be sent down, but I am not sure either.

I feel like there's no way the Cubs would've sent him down if they had to risk losing him through a waiver claim.

If they did send him down it would have revoccable waivers.

Really? Reed Johnson and Jeff Baker are actually pretty good bench players. Clevenger we don't know about yet, but could be a pretty solid backup catcher. Joe Mather is pretty blah, but he is a fifth OF which isn't exactly an amazing player on any team. I know people hate DeWitt, but he isn't terrible as the guy at the end of the bench. The bench lacks any thump, but I would hardly call it extremely bad.

They are serviceable.

Our serviceable bench did just hit back-to-back homers though.

If Mather does what he's doing now in the season, the bench could be very good.

Mather reminds me a little bit of Die Hard a few years back, not in abilites or anything just a spring training hero that got a lot of love from fans. Hopefully the Cubs can get lucky with Mather and LaHair this season.

Bah! Cubs fail. At least they waited to fail until after all the starters were out.

I've written something out about trying to look at this team in the most positive light, and seeing if there is any conceivable notion that this team could be good. Ian Stewart rebounding to what he was in 2009 is a key component of that hope, and I'll be honest the slow start combined with talk of the wrist still bothering him really worried me. The power returning is a good sign.

I think you should post whatever you've written, could be fun.
