Here's something else for you vick, re the time thing

http://m.us.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052970203358704577237603853394654?mg=reno64-wsj

Especially the change your language part. I don't have time vs. It's not a priority.

My time log is really simple

M-f
5:30A - 7ish drive to work, work, drive home
7p-8p - eat dinner
8p - 5a - sleep
Those last 2 lines can vary depending on other things I have to do. Some nights I don't get to bed until 10:30 or later.

weekends
Catch up on all the shit I didn't have time to do during the week.

You work/commute for 13.5 hours a day? 67.5 hrs a week?

You either live way too far from where you work, or you work way too much at your job, or you make a metric shit-ton of money.

Yes I do.

My salary, although not a metric shit-ton, is over double what I made at my previous job which was only an hour away.

Plus I live in Rockford and make a Chicago salary. So I make a lot more than the average Rockfordian.

No way I would trade that much of my time for a commute and work...but to each their own.

I had the choice between this or unemployment/under employment. I’m not 100% happy with it but I gotta do what I gotta do.

Sure, understand the situation...but I'd definitely try and change that as quickly as possible if it were me. E.g. pushing to work remote a few days if the company values you, moving, actively looking for something else etc etc. Maybe you are doing all those things. Time is a pretty precious commodity for me and I wouldn't trade a bigger salary to sacrifice that much quality of life. We could be in totally different places too...I'll be 40 in a few years, have a family etc. In my 20's I probably would do what you're doing for a substantially bigger check.

Working from home isn’t an option at all and moving is a very unlikely option right now.

I was looking for something even before I left my old job but northern IL/southern WI really isn’t a hotbed for mainframe programming. I was literally applying for anything and everything and got nowhere. I only got the job I have now through a former co-worker. It’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know.

At one time I was taking classes to learn newer programming languages but of course now I don’t have the extra time. So I’m kinda stuck until something changes.

It’s funny because I’m only 36 but I had my kids early. One it graduating this year and the other 2 aren’t far behind. So it won’t be long before family isn’t quite as big a factor.

You should try boxing or mma. A few solid blows to the gut will make you reevaluate things.

Drinking a little bit completely alone is actually helping right now, instead of other people questioning me and trying to get answers, I can ask myself.
