Me and my buddy are planning on going to San Diego in late July. Might pop over to Rhode Island as well to visit my grandfather and Aunt.

I'm going down to San Diego (La Jolla) for 4th of July weekend. I was also at Coronado Island a couple months ago, which was really sweet. I was gonna go visit Seaworld, but I recently saw the documentary "Blackfish." Man, that's some fucked up shit they do there, I think I'm gonna boycott them for a while.

I have a few houses on each side. Not many. Behind me are fields for a mile until it turns to woods. In front are fields that go for miles. Go to the south for a mile and you're in the U of I woods.

Yeah man, if you're young and single, Vegas is a must-do. It has the highest concentration of absolutely drop dead gorgeous women in the world. Everywhere you look, there's a 10 walking by. If you hit up the clubs and swimming pools, it's ridiculous. It's also probably the last place in this country where you can see people walking around in the streets with alcohol in their hands. And you haven't been to a strip club until you've been to one in Vegas.

Damn, I need to make my way out there. Everyone is raving about that place, I just need to get my ass to check it out- make sure I'm good with my meds too, so I don't have some seizuire with all dat lights! haha.

Any places you reccomend to check out? Honestly, if it's just my Dad and me going; we;ll have a blast. My Mom hopefully can make it too. Everyone else has so much obligations I doubt I can get someone to swing it. Next option would be to just wait til another one of my friends eats the bullet and we'll have a bachelor party out there. I can meet people no problem, so if I go and my Dad calls it an early night- I'll just clubhop. Could be interesting needless to say haha.

Umm I have been a SERE (survival evasion resistance evasion) Specialist for 20 years. I have put others through continuation training as well as thier initial SERE Training. Yes I use these skills as well. As an expert I recommend methods that kill (bleach, boiling) unless that isnt possible. Then iodine, or Uv if that is all you have. There are far worse things than giardia or just getting diareha to worry about so I like to kill it all to be sure.




30 mins is recommended but I have waited less time in a pinch, shake or stir well. I would be skeptical of any study that showed a UV pen out performed bleach. But hey, technology is a wonderful thing and there may be more-better thingamabobs out there now.

Thats cool man. I wasnt trying to diss your expertise. I am positive you know way more about it than me. I was as surprised as you at the results. I work with these labs on a daily basis so I trust their results. I dont spend as much time as you in the backcountry I am sure, but I spend a fair amount of time out there. Is bleach what SERE recommends? I definitely want to use the best.

Thanks for the info on residence time. Do you say "Shaken, not stirred" while you are mixing up a batch?

Actually we recommend boiling if possible but thats hard to do if you're being hunted. Its really chlorine in the bleach that does the job but yes regular old (unscented) bleach is very effective. So cheap and easy to carry as well.

So you prompted me do some digging on uv purification tonight. First, there are much better products on the market these days. Second, one source claims that after using uv that the water shouldn't be exposed to direct light. Reversal of the dna change is possible. Food for thought

Cool. Thanks. Fortunately, I am not usually hunted except by maybe bears. I was always told that bleach does not kill cysts like cryptosporidium except in unhealthy doses. I have also never heard the post UV direct light thingie. Guess I have more research to do!

Thanks for the advice. We're going to an all-inclusive, so I think they have free bottled water.

Actually you can use ice in your mixed drinks. Resorts used purified water for the ice. Just don't drink the tap water.

I find it kind of humorous that Chicagoland residents ***** like crazy about the horrible Winter.... and its finally over and the area weather is nice, and people go "AIGHT LETS GTFO OF HERE FOR VACAY".

Not saying vacation is a bad idea, I just always find that trend funny..... my mom and sisters do it literally every singe year.... It finally warms up and its time for a week in Tucson Arizona with my Aunt or time for a week in Mexico at a resort.... We get what, like 3 months of warm weather and you spend 2 weeks of it in places that are warm all year round.... :lmao:
