now that we are moving to a 3-4 are these two wasted picks? Sutton isnt playing NT and i really dont see him playing left or right end. As for ego i think he could play NT but no way is he playing over ratliffe or goldman. I want tonsay i thought both played well for rookies in our 4-3 but now... Do they even see the field outside of a few plays?

Ego might get some marginal reps as a two-down DE in a 3-4. Don't see where Sutton fits at all.

I think ego sees the field because he could play NT and I think you can like him up at the 5 from time to time. Case in point, his versatility will get him on the field. Don't think sutton plays much.

Well, they aren't wasted picks are they as such, it's what happens when you have a change of GM/HC.

What will be interesting is to see if Fox and the coaching staff can find a way to use them or not, which is something Bears fans have not had great joy of witnessing over the last (enter X amount of years here)

People have already said Sutton seems to be clear odd man out. I guess we shall see what sub packages they use on the D and if they go to a four man front and what that holds for those of the front three/four.

If they are good players...good coaches will find a way to use them. You could even still see some 4-3 looks and plug a fresh Sutton in at 3-tech with a fresh Jared Allen at end...just to **** with Lovie...er...opposing offenses.

Over the weekend Pace spoke about Ego and Rat as having the ability to play both DE and NT and I think we will see Ego used at both unless they deem he is a far better fit at one or the other.

As for Sutton, there is still the 43 under sub-package that Fangio has used in the past which would allow him to line up at 3-tech and rush the passer.

They are not wasted picks. You need multiple DLmen to play football and it is okay that some of them have different skill sets.

Ferguson will play behind Ratliff at DE and will probably start in 2016.

Sutton will have a role as a situational rusher and possibly a backup NT. Christ he is bigger than Glenn Dorsey and Ian Williams who started for Fangio in SF.

Christ, they are 2nd year players let the develop and breath a little. Just because the Bears drafted a NT does not mean that any guy on the roster is wasted or not going to fit. It means that the Bears were razor thin on the DL.

The best I can answer without being a coach or GM is: Kind of. I can see them being part of rotation on the edges, and definitely useful when moving to the occasional 4 man front, but I wouldn't say they are worth their picks. Hopefully I will be SO wrong, and they will wreck at DE and 4 man fronts, and we'll all be glad that we picked them up last year.

Use them (starters or depth) or trade them. I think they still have some value.

Sutton was incredibly stout against the run last year, far better against the run than as a pass rusher.

I do not see why people do not think he can have a role in a 2-4.

We will find out this summer/fall. For the meantime my speculation is that Ego will compete for the NT position because I think he lacks the length that Fangio seems to prefer with his 5 techs and contrary to popular opinion Sutton may still have a role on the inside in nickle packages. His length limits him as a prototype but rushing the passer supersedes measureables and interior pass rush is a rare commodity in the league. If Sutton can get after the QB they will play him.

At this point both the players and team don't know how they will fit into the new scheme. Ratliff was a probowl NT at 285 lbs and there have been countless other players who don't look like they fit on paper, but when explained what's being asked the light goes on and they actually get to another level in their new role.

I don't think they are wasted picks. Ego Ferguson was projected to be more of a nose tackle. I think Will Sutton was projected as more of a 4-3 defensive tackle. Maybe he can play defensive end?

Anyway, the Bears should have a good rotation on the defensive line. All players will get in game snaps.

Jay Ratliff/Will Sutton
Ego Ferguson/Eddie Goldman
Ray McDonald/Jarvis Jenkins

Although I do think the Bears should put LaMarr Houston at DE instead of LB since he played well at DE for the Raiders in their 3-4.

I forgot to add in that Ferguson was a 2nd round pick and Sutton was a 3rd round pick that many viewed as a 2nd round pick. They have potential.

When Ego was drafted, I believe he came out after his Junior year, I remember Kiper/McShay saying if he had stayed for his senior year he would have had a chance to be a 1st round pick....but his family had money troubles and that was his main reason for coming out.

Sutton was one of the few guys I liked going into the draft, I was ecstatic when we got him in the 3rd.
