No, sorry back to back first round exits aren't anything to be that excited about.
And Tampa Bay relied just about entirely on their farm system... At least they got to the World Series.
Back to back 1st round losses. I'll take it over minimal success and shitty decades. Ask Milwaukee, KC, Cleveland, Toronto, Seattle, NYM, Nats/expos among other teams if they'd take that.
They weren't as home grown as you think. Aki Iwamura was a free agent. Carlos Pena was a free agent. Troy Percival was, Grant Balfour was traded there, cut, then signed to a minor league deal. Hinske was a role player. Bull pen players and other smaller signings. Longo, Crawford, and BJ upton were the only homegrown starters in that line up.
They had a shit ton of trades fall their way and got hot at the right time. That's what it takes. That's balance. What were they missing? Clutch hitting and brains. Why the **** was Andy Sonnenstine allowed to start game 4 of the WS?
And they didn't win the world series. Still waiting.
