Chicago has a high population of japanese people. Maybe he finds this to be a home.
And no offense, but does his wife wanting to be a singer really matter? What if the Cubs offer an extra $10MM. Does he turn that down so she can be a singer? It's not like they are going to be hurting for money..
If they Cubs land him, I could see it being a 6-7 year deal, north of $130MM with a chance for Tanaka to opt out after 3 years.. If he doesn't like it, he has a chance to opt out and go somewhere else.
Compared to New York or the West Coast? Yeah......no. Chicago isn't big on Japanese, guy. The sushi restaurant you went to for lunch last week doesn't count as a comforting, cultural setting for a foreign guy to go to and hang out.
And may think the cubs will be able to shut up a girlfriend and her dreams with money. Have you ever had a girlfriend? Especially one with money? One who doesn't get her way?
