Interested to see what the Dodgers are willing to offer Tanaka now that they're paying Kershaw in excess of $210 million, plus Greinke, Kemp, Ethier, etc.

Have to figure before the season, during, or right after they are going to sell on a big contract in the OF. I'd take Ethier for damaged goods prospects (they can have Ruby Silva or Jae Hoon-Ha and eat 2/3 of the remaining.

Brought up the name, "Tanaka," to 2 people at owners meetings this morning. They both had the same response: Beware of the Cubs.

there is no more bidding. . every team can negotiate with him and the one he chooses to sign with has to pay the Japan team the 20 Mil.

Tanaka can pick whomever he wants and there is a month deadline after he posts. I think that ends the 24th of Jan.

You are correct.

I don't believe that Tanaka will play in Chi-Town. Wife wants to act. No acting in Chi-Town. They are moving to a forin culture. They are not going to play the she lives in LA he lives in Chi-Town when they are both trying to establish.

To even try to conceive needs a reality check. Wrong situation for their family.

I honestly don't think this matters. I'm not saying the cubs will sign him but this is the same sort of crap people said about Cutler having a house in Tennessee so that meant he was a lock to go to the Titans. How often is Tanaka going to be in the home town of his team? You're talking maybe a week at a time then there's a road trip. Plus, what's to stop him from having a house in LA and playing in Chicago or New York? His wife can still act and he can live there during the off season. Its not like his wife will follow him around with the team from city to city.

I think its the case of writers having no fucking clue where he's going so they are trying to find an angle to have something to write about. If he doesn't come to the cubs it wont be because of his wife. It will be because they are too far from contention.

Money usually talks louder than anything else. Not saying the Cubs will offer the most...

Chicago has a high population of japanese people. Maybe he finds this to be a home.

And no offense, but does his wife wanting to be a singer really matter? What if the Cubs offer an extra $10MM. Does he turn that down so she can be a singer? It's not like they are going to be hurting for money..

If they Cubs land him, I could see it being a 6-7 year deal, north of $130MM with a chance for Tanaka to opt out after 3 years.. If he doesn't like it, he has a chance to opt out and go somewhere else.

Maybe but again, I really can't see his wife's preference mattering in the grand decision. It's not like he's some poor schlum. With what he'll make he can afford 2 houses plus the travel to go between them. Like I said, I don't think it's a guarantee the cubs are in play or anything just that it isn't really a deciding factor.

There's actually quite a lot of opportunities to act in Chicago from hit TV Shows to movies, to theater.

Why would the Dodgers eat money and get nothing in return for Ethier?

It's probably not the money as you said, they won;t need it. It's all the rest that goes with it.

The Cubs are "pushing hard" for Masahiro Tanaka, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal on Twitter. The Angels "remain involved" on the 25-year-old righty, says Rosenthal, along with other teams that have been prominently linked to the Japanese ace (such as the Yankees and Dodgers).

We have heard previously that the Cubs were prepared to make a major offer to Tanaka. Indeed, as club president Theo Epstein has said previously, he "wish[es] there was a free agent market for young players." Tanaka is about as close as things get to such a market.

The involvement of the two Chicago organizations in the Tanaka sweepstakes is an indication of his broad market appeal. (The White Sox are one of a few teams confirmed to have met with Tanaka, though some cold water has since been thrown on their interest.) Both clubs have substantial resources, but neither has qualified for the postseason since 2008 and neither looks primed to break up that trend in 2014. Nevertheless, both teams have made substantial free agent commitments over the last two years to relatively youthful players (Edwin Jackson for the Cubs and Jose Dariel Abreu for the White Sox).
