O sorry I trust someone who has two World series rings. I don't get why everyone thinks they are GM's all the sudden and know better moves than professional general managers

What did you think of Jim Hendry and did you have him as an avatar prior to putting Theo there?

I haven't been here that long so I don't know. Just curious.

Anyways, back to the point of this thread...

Renteria just told the media that he sat in on the Cubs meeting with Tanaka and does not know where the Cubs currently stand in their chances of landing him

CSNMooney: Renteria confirms he was part of Cubs meeting with Tanaka and jokes that he has ordered Rosetta Stone tapes.

@ESPNChiCubs: Renteria said he sat in on meeting w Tanaka. Cubs basically pitched him using their youth movement, per Renteria

So they sold him on how teams sucks while spending no money. Interesting

Hendry had some good and bad, just like every General Manager does. I mean Hendry's tenure could have been completely different if maybe Prior didnt blow out his arm or get hit with a screaming line drive, or Wood didnt blow his arm out(partially his fault too), Nomar didnt get hurt.

The Soriano looked really good on paper but turns out Soriano didnt totally live up to his contract.

So they told him on the team sucks and while spending no money, except offering him offer $100MM

By this fantastic logic. We should go sign Aubrey Huff to a gigantic deal and let him bat 3rd ahead of Rizzo. Aubrey Huff has 2 WS rings. You should trust him too, right?

If this guy know so much more than I do. Why the hell were Stewart and Volstad on this team like they were future pieces when a simple eye test shows those two are perennial dumpster dives?

Except Tanaka's first question probably was: If I pitch my ass off and give up 1 run over 8 innings, how are we going to win the game?

That's point is stupid. Players and General Managers are totally different. Im sure there are a couple players that were on the Patriots and barely ever saw the field and have 3 rings because of Brady and the rest of the starters on those teams..

Ricketts(which is a different topic) isn't giving a lot of money to the baseball department. Both Colvin and Stewart needed a change of scenery. Stewart happened to not work out.

Cubs needed a way to dump Zambrano. Volstad used to have some potential but never fully put it together. The Cubs took a shot and it didnt work out.

On the same note, the Cubs took chances on Feldman and T Wood and those worked out...

Cubs offer him 20 million more than another team then he could be ours. If not, he isn't choosing is over a playoff contender

As far as the topic at hand, I think most money wins this thing. I don't know if the Cubs are going to be that team, but I've allowed my hope to go from non-existent to extremely slight with the recent news.

Not at 8 years it didn't. The length was a head scratcher from the beginning. I'm guessing Hendry would say they had to give him 8 years to sign with the Cubs...

Hendry originally negotiated 6 years before the Trib added 2 as part of their spending spree to rev up franchise value IIRC

A number of owners are “convinced” that the Cubs will sign Masahiro Tanaka

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported this morning that the Cubs are “pushing hard” to sign Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. Teams like the Yankees and Dodgers have obviously received much of the attention so far, but ESPN’s Jayson Stark provides more evidence why we should start taking the Cubs seriously here:

Jayson Stark ✔ @jaysonst
In non-replay news, amazing how many owners in Ariz. were convinced #Cubs are ready to blow away the field & sign Tanaka to a monster deal.

It’s unclear what a “monster deal” means exactly, but one would have to assume that it would be well above $100 million. It could be worth it for a team like the Cubs, who are trying to find their way back to relevancy. While they are loaded with top position prospects like Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Alberto Almora, Jorge Soler and Arismendy Alcantara, they are a bit short on the pitching side. Signing Tanaka, while expensive, would be huge for the rebuilding effort.

Tanaka has until January 24 (next Friday) at 5:00 p.m. ET to sign with a team.

If the Cubs are willing to "Blow away the field" how much are we talking?

Again everything is speculation but it sounds like most people expect Tanaka to get somewhere in the ballpark of $110-$130MM. if the Cubs are willing to blow away the competition are they talking $150MM? A little more, a little less?

which is why I think its going to be close to a 25 mil per deal for 7 yrs with maybe those last 2 yrs being options. .
