Quote from the mayor of Oslo:

"Together we will punish the murderer. His punishment will be more generosity, more tolerance and more democracy."

Echoes the sentiments of the Norwegian people pretty well. Over 150 000 people showed up on streets of Oslo for the vigil and thousands around other cities in Norway.

Oslo has a mayor? Who'd a thunk it? I figured they'd have a collective with a rotating spokesperson for dissemination of official proclamations.

I miss the vikings. I thought the people of Norway were bad ass maurading types that raped and pillaged. I am only 1/16th Norwegian, but I expected more vitriol from 'my people' towards the murderer.

Apparently Norway is now the land of the shiny happy people from the R.E.M. song.

This part of the article is the most salient:

Sanchez adds that only 20 percent of Norwegian prisoners return to jail within two years of their release, a very low recidivism rate. (For comparison, a 1994 study suggested that more than 60 percent of released prisoners in America were arrested again within three years, while 51.8 percent returned to prison. The U.S. rate of incarceration also dwarfs Norway's.)
