Jesus Christ Crawford on that 5-3 at the end was insane. Haven't seen a goalie stack the pads in 10 years!

Decent opening. It will probably take a few games for them to get into the stride of things. The PK was a little iffy, thought it lacked the mobility of last year, but then again the Caps have always had a potent PP. The Hawks PP didn't impress, hope they will finally figure it out this year. Could see that in a long season having a shit PP will bite them eventually far more than last year. Glad to see the bottom lines getting results and causing general havoc. Those will again be key for a successful season. Crawford was good, couldn't really blame any of the goals on him and he had his moment in that 90 second 5 on 3.

A win is a win and the best way to start a new year. I wonder if this upcoming schedule with just 2 games in 8 days is a good thing or a bad thing? At least they ought to have time to practice those special teams.

I thought the Hawks had moments of great play but then also had some times of sloppy play and the PK was way too passive. The thing is that Washington put a lot of pressure all night creating that sloppiness and their PP has some 1-time threats that can back off a PK, so I guess a lot of what I cringed on was credit due the opponent.

Not a big fan of Nordstrom thus far, but I know it's early and he's still learning. The PK unit looked way too tight to me. The Caps were setting up their PP way to close to the net without any pressure. I'm not sure how many PP goals the Caps scored when Nordstrom was on the ice (I know there was at least one).

On the plus side, I thought the ceremony was great. I got the goose bumps throughout the entire thing. Just awesome.

Glad to come away with the win!

For that got to see it live, you guys got to watch a hell of a game. A bit of a roller coaster but they came out on top. The last 4-5 minutes were nerve wracking.

Even though he gave up 4 goals... I think that was one of the better games that I have seen Crawford play!

Nordstrom was on PK for 2 of Caps PP goals. +1 for the night though. My only complaint with his play is the rookie mistake of sailing that puck when he had lots of time. Not sure I'd fault him for the PP goals against. 3 other skaters on the ice as well for them.

Thought the team looked good, had no complaints with their play. Thought officiating sucked. Sharp was pushed into Holtby and they clearly missed Green holding the puck then directing it away from pressure instead of dropping it immediately.

2 points closer to Stanley Cup repeat.

My favorite teams
 1. Portland Timbers
 1. Chicago Blackhawks
The good:

Banner raising ceremony was awesome. 1st and 4th lines playing at, or above the level we should expect of them, respectively. Crawford was monster on the 2-man disadvantage and had no chance on 3 of the 4 goals.

The bad:

Unforced turnovers were an issue. Leddy and Rosie looked very pedestrian.

The ugly:

The PK, aside from the monster kill on the 2 man disadvantage, was very meh. Norstrom looked so far out of his depth he needed water wings. And finally, it still amazes me that Eddie-O can do a great job as an MC but then when he gets back to the broadcast booth to do color commentary his schtick is so bad i want to throw a fridge through the TV.

It's okay though--I'm not concerned, it was 1 game, we won and broke the banner curse. I'm sure that a lot of jitters and cobwebs were shaken off now that it's out of the way.

Awesome way to begin the cup defense. :)

The first goal deflected off Hammer's stick to Ovechkin, which threw Crow's timing and positioning off. The 3rd an 4th goals were tipped in. So the only goal he'd want back is the second one, which still was an odd man rush.

2nd line had it's chances, Sharp's breakaway, Hossa's shot from the slot (nice pass by Sharpie) and Sharp's shot from the slot on the PP, which hit Holtby in the shoulder or mask and that Holtby was lucky to stop. Anyway, Hossa potted, sorta, the empty netter at the end of the game and Zeus' pass to Saad was killer as was Saad's finish on the goal ( who represented the 3rd line with a goal and two assists).

We easlily could have had 8 or 9 goals last night.

Didn't realize until this morning that Grabovski got a hat trick last night. Unless I totally missed it, I don't think Doc or Eddy ever alluded to it during the game.

RE the Hawks PP: they were 1 for 4. ...and their first goal was scored right as the PP ended. ...and The PP in which Sharp hit Holtby in the shoulder/face mask was like a shootin' gallery. If we can score on 1 in 4 chances, on a consistent basis, I'll take that. Our PP might have seemed more anemic than it actually was because our PK, which is still working out its kinks, was facing the best PP in the league last year. However, the PK on the 5 on 3 - especially Crow & Hammer blocked an Ovi missile - was marvelous!
