The best part of this game was when Toews was getting mauled behind the net and David came in to grab Theo Peckham off of him. Then as Peckham was skating to the box John Scott intervened.

GONNA BE A FUN YEAR!!!!!!!!

GO SCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really like Saads play tonight and Lavin fit in nice with our system. I would not be surprised if he were up with the big club within a year or two, he has a calming presence when he has the puck, nothing jittery, played like it was his 4th year in camp. Might be because he bounced around a lot before finishing college, regardless he was one of the few in prospects camp I was impressed with (only went one day) and his play tonight furthered my belief.

Saad showed some great skating abilities out there and yes calm with the puck. I too was pretty impressed with that young kids signs tonight. Not going to lie as far as the first timers out there tonight he stood out for sure. Should be fun keeping an eye on that kid.

McNeil also had a pretty strong game. Sort of reminds me of Bolland in some aspects of his game. Wouldn't say his performance tonight was one that wins him a spot on the team but it certainly keeps him in the hunt. Another kid we should all be thrilled to have in our system.

I did miss not seeing a tussle or 2 tonight though. Not Scott as I wouldn't think any of the Oilers would bite on that but would have been nice to see a middle weight or a light weight tilt.

I like Montadore and Leddy together even though at times tonight they were overplaying pucks together and not taking the point shots on the PP which I was expecting a few times. I expect that as they feel each other out. Could be a good pairing if Q and the gang go that route.

Kind of a shitty game for us to look at the two goalies battling for the backup job, I was really looking forward to seeing what Emery and Salak had to offer. Unfortunately neither faced any amount of action where I can get an idea for either.

Mcneill looked really good, the pass he had to Mayers for the second goal was an absolute thing of beauty.

We played well in the first despite not getting a goal. We were grinding along the boards really well. Saad looked good, I liked what Montador brought. After that due to shitty picture hard to really break down the game, just happy to see the hawks on the ice again.

Amen... looks like the Hogs will be pretty good this year as well.

Here is what stuck out to me:

The Good:

Scott looked like he added rockets to his skates. This can be nothing but good because even if he is the odd guy out on most gamenights, when we do want a bit of size he'll not be as much of a liability.

The "pack mentality" was there, which was sorely missing.

Beach, with the exception of his one giveaway, looked very solid. I doubt he cracks the club this year but if he keep up his play level and screws his head on straight he could pan out next year when guys like Brunette are gone.

Olesz really impressed me.

The Bad:

Stalberg looked like he didn't make any improvement in the offseason whatsoever (unlike just about every other returning face on the ice to varying degrees). The only good I noticed about him was on the mega-sequence where we pinned the oil down for over 2 mins in their own zone and he prevented a couple of clearing attempts beautifully. It defininitely helpted the team then, but his passing and shooting were more off target than the F-16 that strafed the elementry school in New Jersey a few years back.

The PK looked as anemic as it did last year. This has to change.

The interesting:

Salak and Emery looked about the same. I don't think we'll go "wrong" with either as backup and the batle will be interesting to see.

All in all I know there's plenty of offseason left especially since few faces played who would actually be in the big squad, but I think the one thing to take home from this game is that the PK still needs to be worked on.

Liked what Leddy and Montador did as a pairing thats for sure.

McNeill looked like he has been better than he was at Prospect Camp and Saad was seen all over the place.... Impressive for only a game. Danault I hardly noticed....

Agreed with Lord on Olesz. For 3 million, that's not too bad. He's definitely impressing me as well.

Overall, potential with this team is definitely there, and improvements can easily be done... and on the bright side, if Q wants to play musical lines, we won't have to ***** about that during the preseason. I have high hopes with this club this year.

Should we really be concerned about the poor showing of the special teams last night considering the team we iced? (Not being snarky, just asking. I think we're all a little gun shy when our power play does sweet **** all after last season)

The problem with the PK looked like it was the concept at large, not the personnel on it. In other words, a coaching and not player issue. It's really the only reason I brought it up as a potential negative.

Tough to even judge the concept considering most of the guys in the lineup don't fully understand the hawks strategy on the PK. Of the guys there last night I think the only one who played PK last year was Toews, so the rest probably aren't very familiar with how the hawks run the PK

I would imagine it's more a players never using that system, then the coaches way of teaching it. I gotta hope their is more too the Hawks special teams than what these players are used to... and if there isn't, well then I guess we have a big problem with coaching.

EDIT: Damn I see you beat me to it.

Jesus that was quick? Are those clubs already starting now or something? What's the harm in letting them hang around some... especially to see what's it's like to play some with the big boys.

Good move. With the deep prospect pool there is no need to rush them up to the pros. I think Beach, Smith, and Morin deserves longer looks at this point. Anybody have an opinion regarding Hayes or Stanton last night?

Stanton looked pretty good, could see him being a nice call-up player this year should a defenseman go down. Wasn't all that impressed with Hayes last night, had a few good plays along the boards, but seemed like he tried to force things in the offensive zone, definitely needs at least a year in Rockford

Agree. That was quick. I thought both were at least due for one more pre-season game. I agree there is no need to rush these 2 but I don't think giving them a few more minutes each in a pre-season game hurts anyone in any way. Guess you do have to make room for other prospects to get the ice time also and the vets have to get some minutes before season starts. Just not sure if you drop a first round center that quickly who def showed last night he was in the game.

I understand the move but I don't agree with it. One game too early.

Also agree on Hayes Shoots. Def was forcing things a bit too much. Kids got some talent in there though. Def needs some Rockford time. Promising though.
