No turnovers should not be happening at all from anyone. . .

Not really true about hockey- but rather hockey is more about how you (particularly as a team) manage things when it does happen.

Edit: Campbell still isn't a defensive defenseman - so, no Campbell being on the team would not have changed things a bit... actually check that --- rephrase things -- Campbell has never been a defensive defenseman -so nothing would have changed there, in fact short of Rod Langway in his prime on the team, along with probably Doug Wilson in his prime -nothing much would change (this team is defensively inept.).

Hawk turnovers mainly happen on one to many passes though. Mainly because of that is why so many guys get caught out of position

not really. Keith has sucked all year. Toews can get a break from a turnover since, well he is toews and is much much much better than stalberg and makes far less bad plays than stalberg, and makes more amazing plays than stalberg....so to use that as your arguement is just silly, and....makes you look like a real fucking idiot even bringing that up. try again lil buddy.

Keith's had good stretches and bad stretches this season.

Edit: And that's already been mentioned.

Campbell was a one-man breakout and a one-man entry into the other team's end. He did it a ton. Right now, the Hawks struggle accomplishing both of those tasks with all five players. That's why he's missed.

His puck handling/vision is what they miss. Not his "offensive defenseman" role.

You just described an offensive minded defenseman to a T and then well, not sure where it went to, but you say that is what the team is missing...

I contend what is missed is being able to take away chances from the other teams, and more than likely from high percentage areas (I'm at a disadvantage in that I can't see entire games -and the highlights will only show when they get scored on for the most part).

I'm of the opinion that the team is more in need of a guy like Steve Smith than some puck moving defenseman who is kinda weak on positional defense -such as taking away the high percentage shooting lanes. Or at this point a couple of them... Hard to find, though... and apparently nothing like that on anyone's trading block.

____

Edit- to address Ice's loose puck ... I should also add that hockey is also how you, as a team, manage the other team's cough ups. . . however, since we were only talking about defense and give aways ... I limited it to that. Plus I was speaking in general. I don't think you can knock a team for coughing up the puck- as it happens in every game and everyone does it -no matter, the level... it is just that bad things happen when, you as a team, aren't managing the situation well.

I guess I like the Mike Keenan philosophy of team building better than Quenneville's ... only insofar is that the Keenan model emphasized team D from everyone (ok, granted it was also before the cap -but I doubt that would have changed Keenan's approach to the game ... as defensive focussed guys are generally cheaper to sign.

Oh well, my team good times or bad times... it's still hockey.

You said that Campbell "still isn't a defensive defenseman," and I was agreeing with that point by listing all the qualities he had that they sorely missed right now. I didn't see why you made that statement when I don't think anyone here said he was. Confusion all over the place, apparently.

I see your point. But I think a big problem the Hawks have is getting the puck out of their own end and geting the puck into the other team's end -- and it'd be nice if there was a player on the squad who could take care of that by himself, every now and then.

All I can think of is that I was listing other aspects that I suspect the team is missing now; and was going on the Trib reports of the team's own statements about citing odd-man rushes as being an issue -which doesn't suggest being hemmed into their own end, but rather poor breakout passes, bad neutral zone play and probably an over-commitment to forechecking in the offensive zone (meaning players caught in too deep to get back).

If that is the consistently the case of course only watching the games (-which I am admitting I can't), is going to show that. I suppose too that that would be shwon on highlights of goals against. My point being that, a breakout specialist isn't going to change that ... not if forwards aren't covering for d-men pinching in.

Both of those problems would alleviated by a good puck-moving defenseman. (Example: Brian Campbell) The forechecking? I only remember one rush from the last game where that happened. Both defensemen had pinched, and there were two forwards up high. Kruger was one, don't recall the other. COL got the puck and headed up ice, those two forwards didn't realize the D had pinched, and the odd-man rushed ended up in a goal.

If that is the consistently the case of course only watching the games (-which I am admitting I can't), is going to show that. I suppose too that that would be shwon on highlights of goals against. I think this odd-man rush debate was slightly blown out of proportion, because the Hawks gave up so many against the Avalanche. The bigger problems, from what I've seen, are: getting out of their end, getting through the neutral zone and establishing possession in the other team's end. Again, something puck-moving D-men could help with. Although the forwards to help out with, too.

Colorado game aside (as that game seemed like a jailbreak from the Hawks own end on), there's awful defensive coverage by the forwards. Wingers are collapsing and trying to do others' jobs. Campbell doesn't help solve that.

Defense has been terrible at either clearing the house or clearing the puck. Campbell helps only in one of those departments, part of the time.

This has been a problem for more than just this season. Surely Campbell in place of Leddy makes a difference, but that's moreso because of Leddy's terrible defensive play, since he is too puny and weak positionally to clear either the house or the puck than Campbell actually being a sound defenseman.
