I'm not sure how you call that a mental mistake, imo. I call it a safe decision. I haven't seen the replay yet, but it looked to me like Lester caught his spike as he was falling towards the 1st base side of the mound, and he took the safe play by throwing out the runner at 1st.
It's also hard to argue since it led to no runs and Lester getting out of the inning. Ramirez and Johnson's miscommunication, however, led to 5 runs. :dunno:
Having said that, I do think Lester not wanting to throw it over is weird, and I think we'll hear more about it moving forward. I think Maddon will help him out here.
Interestingly, it could place emphasis on the throwing arm for Cubs C's rather than the framing that has been so much talked about.
