Neil Druckmann, the creative director of The Last of Us, has implied that the company is already working on a sequel that will be focused on main characters Ellie and Joel.

The developer stated during an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit that, “We're playing with some ideas, but no direction has been set yet for the next game.”

hahahahah, I actually think a prequel would be interesting. But it wouldn't involve Ellie, obviously.

If they do continue the story with Ellie and Joel, they can't make it too far ahead in the future. Joel is in his 50's.. I don't know how they'd have a 60+ year old running around and doing all that shit again haha.
