I have too much stuff. Too much that I don't use/look at anymore. Definitely going to do garage sales, going to donate some to Goodwill this weekend.

Any other tips? I've seen this topic mentioned in passing. Anything else I could/should be doing to rid myself of all my stuff?

Also: sticky?

Give it to Salvation Army. Goodwill is a scam.

From Snopes - http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/charities.asp

" :*Goodwill Industries International*is not a business that takes in donated items and resells them for a profit. It is a not-for-profit organization that provides job training, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face employment challenges. Goodwill raises money for their programs through a chain of thrift stores which also operate as non-profits."

The rumor about goodwill being a scam is false.

And the salvation army boss is on a 6 figure salary.

I'd go with goodwill if I were you.

Well Goodwill is a lot closer, if I'm going to try and adopt this lifestyle might as well keep my gas usage down.

One man's junk is another man's treasure. Sell as much as you can.

Don't give it away for nothing, because & unless;
  • You'll be able to make more money on most of the stuff than Goodwill/Salvation Army/St. Vincents.
  • You'll secure your NEEDS first, which will further help you as a minimalist and set you up for the long run.
  • You can donate your excess(either funds or goods) and help people directly, including the programs mentioned above.
  • When you go through things, you'll be surprised that you have something that you may not have wanted/needed back in the day, but could use now.

I give a lot away to charity, but I follow strict rules for doing so. And I don't ever claim any charity on taxes(personal principal, as it contradicts some of the purpose of philanthropy IMO).

Can this thread be a trade/sell thread?

Or does that go against some internet law?

We could possibly come up with something.

If established members want to sell personal belongings, we'll use our best judgment to allow it(the fine line between ecommerce/spam/and whatever category you want to put garage-sale type of listings). And whatever happens would be between the buyer and seller, with CCS not being liable for any transactions. All risk is on the buyer and seller.

If you want to list a few things for grabs/sale here(in this thread), go ahead. This time, I'll give you the 'blessing' as nothing more than an experiment, until we're sure about what we can do and want to do within the interest of the site.

Also: I'm sure there are some people that might have season tickets or ticket plans to any of the Chicago teams. Perhaps they could be sold through that forum, provided they are done at box office prices and you are not scalping?

I am loving the trade idea, not to derail the thread- post stuff you no longer want and harvest offers!

How far are you going to go?
if there is stuff you are on the fence about, box it up for a while and if you don't miss it, give it away or sell it.

I have a minimalist friend, and she loves it- she gets top of the line for things she deems necessary, because she saves money on crap she doesnt need.
she does it because travelling is her passion, and she has the money and freedom to go and see everything she wants!

I have four or five beers signs. As I've gotten older, I just think that shit is stupid. I'm going to keep one for the garage, because it has a chalkboard and I can see some use for it, but the rest of them aren't needed. I only need one tv, I want to get rid of my extra. Same goes for my other DVD player. I recently bought an item of clothing out of necessity, I just got back from donating 15 items to Goodwill. I only cook with, at most, 4 pots/pans, but I have a ton of them.

I have a fucking crepe maker - why??

It's just stuff. Stuff I thought I needed at one point that does me nothing anymore. I have a three bedroom/2 bathroom home that feels small because of the shit I have, and I live alone. I'm just tired of it.
