I wasn't saying that he was having a better season than all those players. I was trying to point out that he is having a better season than he has ever had on the Bears. I don't follow ESPNS QBR, but since it was pointed out about his highest game, and lowest game, I figured I would look at it. He is ranked #10. Do you think he is having a better season than he has had here?

Pretty low bar, but yes.

Cutler is ranked 10th above such "elite" names as Tony Romo, Russel Wilson, Tom Brady, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, Joe Flacco, Alex Smith, RG3, Big Ben, and Eli Manning. I would think that would equate to playing pretty good football.
I'm not sure the point. You've listed 3 multiple SB winners, another single SB winner and a bunch of young guys making nothing near JC money and, Romo and Flacco are the embodiment of the argument against giving JC the big money.

While I think Cutler is a better than average all around QB, some of this stuff is pretty interesting.

In fact, his passer rating this season when the game is within two touchdowns is 82.3 (10 touchdowns, eight interceptions). That’s 22nd among NFL starters and below Cutler’s 85.0 career average in that scenario coming into this season.

I would say that is a bit concerning, and I was a bit surprised that his passer rating isn't much better than his career average.

If, by chance, McCown plays at a similar level, the question of value is going to be huge, facing a possible $70-100M contract

While I generally agree with the article, what you highlighted in red is absolute B.S. Sure, taking only part of his performance into question may cause his numbers to look weaker when compared to every QB who has not been equally handicapped by the author. In other words, the author took that Cutler's numbers, skewed them, and compared them to everyone else, unskewed, in order to make his point. This part of the article is what doesn't sit right with me.

Keep good until you find elite? There's only 4 elite QBs in the league. How about you get good for way cheaper, who is also younger and not known to be injury prone, and move forward?

Hard to judge injury prone coming out of college...Was Cutler injury prone in college??

Because you don't know what good is because you cant see the future? Is it wrong to have a backup plan, a failsafe in case your plan doesn't work?

That comparison is against all QB's in the same circumstances. I think it is actually a valuable tool, as defenses tend to play softer late in games when up multiple TD's. This gives you a look at how JC plays versus straight up defenses as compared to other QB's in the exact same set of parameters.

Ok. Then is it fair to say he is progressing in Trestmans offense? That was my whole point.

I don't know. He has a better line and better weapons this year too so it's tough for me to say Cuter is "improving" when 1. the statistical improvement isn't that large and 2. it may not be really Cutler "improving" so much as he has better players around him. It's tough to gauge "progression" in the offense because this is the base line season for it. Trestman's offense is better than Tice, but that was kind of to be expected. Not sure if that is really a progression for Cutler so much as a regression to the above average that he was before Tice. (2013 Rate + of 103)

On the other hand, the lack of JC's likely 14-17M/yr cap number would allow for known quantity FA upgrades on D

Totally agree. I guess I just want beastly youth on th dl. Especially if mccown is able to win a championship.

He is simply average and you're telling me there will be no average QBs available to the Bears?

lol hes a starting caliber qb who we have won a lot of games with and stand to win even more. now honestly I don't see a fa qb coming up who would be the better guy imo and I figure we draft somewhere around 15ish so who would u suggest?

Derek Carr, Zach Mettenberg, Brett Hundley if you're only looking at the 15th pick for a QB
