If I had one team to root for in the east, it would be the Rangers.

Boston, Bolts, Panthers, Jets. Hate the Rangers, Pens, Caps. Sick and tired of the Devils (though Kovie is good for a laugh)

Ha! Everyone is underestimating how good the Rangers are going to be this year. Richards is a lot bigger addition to that team than people realize.

Frolov-Richards-Gaborik

Wolski-Dubinsky-Callahan

Avery-Anisimov-Prust

Fedetenko-Boyle/Stepan-Rupp

That's just on paper... Dubisnky will likely spend a lot of time on the LW if Stepan continues to improve and that 3rd line is one hell of a checking line. I've heard that Avery might be getting some time on the first line with Richards and Gaborik as well since him and Gabs play well together and Avery is actually a pretty good hockey player when he's not being an asshole.

Their defense ain't too shabby either to go along with their world class goaltender.

Then you factor in the coach and you fight for the 8th seed. Torts is good at taking below average players and sticking them into a rigid system that brings them up to above average players

Well, you said it.

On paper.

That's been the revolving door of the NYRangers.

I'm saying that's my rough estimate of the lines on paper as a lot of the Rangers can play other positions etc... frolov scored over 30 goals a couple years ago in LA... Now with another star center setting up plays for him and Gaborik... that line is going to be scary.

Whoops! I forgot Frolov went to the KHL after last season... well the Rangers LW depth kinda blows then.

Ovechkin has 3 game winners in 37 career playoff games, once again he's not a clutch player

And Crosby has 5 game winners in 82 playoff games, he must not be clutch either.

Also, Ovechkin has 4 game winners, to his credit, in 37 games... not 3.

And RK, I didn't give you a minus. As an admin I rarely ever use the feature, more for the community to decide.

Can I throw out a hypothetical?

Ovie scores the 3rd goal and the Caps go up 3 to 2. Their opponent ties the game 3 to 3. Green scores the Caps 4th goal and the Caps go on to win the game. Green ends up with the game winner and becomes the clutch player and Ovie become just a "guy!" Now if the score had held up at 3 to 2 and the Caps win, then Ovie would have been the clutch player!
<

Am I getting this right on how you determine the so call clutch player?

Oh! I forgot to mention that my hypothetical is a playoff game!

This could be misleading. For all I know Ovie has a hat trick in one game and fell flat on the other three... Same can be said for Crysbaby... Contect of the goals is what makes them clutch, not whether or not they scored or how much. Were they meaningful. And that you cant' see on paper, you have to go to the tape.

Fine. Remember, you asked for this:

2008 Playoffs vs Flyers

Scored the game winner with less than 5 minutes to go in Game 1 (the video I posted previously), earlier in the period assisted on the game tying goal. For the next 3 games, he only had 3 assists, and the Flyers took a 3-2 lead going into Game 6. Game 6, an elimination game, tied going into the third period, Ovechkin forced a turnover which led to a breakaway goal early in the period. Halfway through he scored another big goal to seal the game. Game 7 assisted on the first goal of the game. Late in the 2nd Ovechkin scores the game tying goal which would end up being the last goal in regulation as they went into OT where they lost.

Putting aside his physical play which has even more importance in the playoffs, he scored 4 goals, 2 of them being game winners, and all of them being "clutch". There was no padding of the stats in blowouts.

2009 Playoffs vs Rangers

Game 1, looked like he scored first goal, but was ruled tipped in. Got an assist. Going into the 3rd period down a goal, assisted on the game tying goal, which the word assist doesn't really do justice. Standing to the side of the net, a fired puck that misses the net bounces back to him off the boards, he backhands it which goes over the goalie and put in by a player on the opposite side of the net. Hard to explain in words. A losing effort, but both goals wouldn't have been possible without the play of Ovechkin.

Game 2 Lundqvist played an amazing game, 1-0, 38 save victory with the only time he was "beat" was an Ovechkin shot which glanced off the crossbar with 5 or 6 minutes to go in the game.

Game 3 a rare game in which Semin and Backstrom actually contributed heavily, Ovechkin assisted on both their 1st period goals which they went on to win 4-0.

Game 4: Another great game by Lundqvist. Won 2-1 with 38 saves. The only time he was beat, again, by Ovechkin, down 2-0 in the third period he forced a turnover off a defensive zone face off, broke away, and with 2 defenders in his face, took an amazing shot from above the circle and found the back of the net. Gave his team a chance to hang in, but Lundqvist was too good. Not for a lack of trying, Ovechkin took 11 shots that game, just gotta tip your hat sometimes.

Game 5: Elimination game for the Caps, Ovechkin with a big goal with 30 seconds left in the 2nd period that put the score 4-0 and out of reach. Highlight reel goal, can't describe it in words.

Game 6: Elimination game for Caps, a game in which Ovechkin gets some big time help with Poti getting 4 points. But it's Ovechkin with the game winner on a great tip in goal late in the 2nd period.

Game 7: Elimination game, Ovechkin plays more of a supporting role, with the team actually taking the load this time. Won 2-1.

vs Penguins

Game 1: Go ahead goal scored late in first, they would go on to win 3-2.

Game 2: Hat trick game. With Crosby giving the Penguins a 1-0 edge after the first, scored an early big goal in the 2nd period to tie it up. Tied again past the halfway mark of the third period, Ovechkin scores the go ahead goal to break up the tie. Couple minutes later he scores again, which would hold up to be the game winner in light of Crosby's last second heroics.

Game 3: Scores the always important first goal right out of the gate, not even 2 minutes in. After Pittsburgh scores 2 goals and takes the lead, with less than 2 minutes to go in the game on a power play, Ovechkin crashing the net deflects the puck over to Backstrom for the game tying goal. Penguins would go on to win in OT

Game 5: Penguins score first in the 2nd period with Staal but only a minute later Ovechkin answers to tie it back up with laser from the blue line while his vision is blocked by Orpik. Ovechkin would also assist on the go ahead goal late in that period. Penguins score twice in the third to take the lead, and with about 4 minutes to go in the game, Ovechkin scores the game tying goal to force OT. Unfortunately for the Caps, the Penguins have Malkin, one of the best players in the league not named Ovechkin or Crosby, and he wins it.

Game 6: Elimination game for Caps. Again, Ovechkin with 3 points in 3 assists, but having his team actually back him up with big games from Kozlov and Semin. Doesn't happen too often.

Game 7: Scored once but the game was over basically after Crosby scored and then Adams scored a few seconds later in the first period. Just too much talent. The better team won and would go on to get back to the Final for the second year in a row and this time win it.

Outside of that Game 7, just about every single damn point Ovechkin has put up in his first two initial postseasons, whether it's an assist or goal, or laying out a big hit or whatever, it's come at a big time in the game. I really don't feel like finishing this, because my brain is melting, so you can go ahead and take a look at his last 2 postseasons. I know he's had more than a few game tying goals late in the game, a game winner, goals to force overtime, or has factored in on those goals with an assist. It's just too much for me to lay out. It should be obvious by now.

I don't even know what the debate in this thread is about anymore.

Gordie Howe was over-rated. That's all I know.

The Rangers have always looked good on paper, remember the teams they had in the late 90s, on paper they looked unstoppable yet never made it to the playoffs.

They also spent 100 mil a year for awhile. I think they also missed the playoffs most of those years?

From 97-98 until the lockout they never made the playoffs and it was during this time they paid big money to guys like Bure, Jagr, Fleury, Kovalevm Holik and Lindros.

Yeah they were the Yankees of hockey, except without all the winning.
