Halfway thru the season there were still many people here expecting the bears to be competitive next year, with a chance at the playoffs.

Even with $130 mil in FA, you’ll still only be able to upgrade a handful of positions. And poles drafting so far looks questionable at best.

I have to imagine, by now, you finally realize this team is multiple offseasons from even being middle of the pack, right?

the Bears are awful, that is for sure. the OL is so bad, not sure any of them start on many other teams. at this point I don't see how they count on Jenkins, he's hurt so much of the time

Yeah this is a 2-offseason project at least. Which is why gaining an extra 1st next draft is important.

Having said that, I do think it makes sense to make all your splashy FA signings in one offseason given how comp picks work. Perhaps too early to worry about that, but we really need to get on that comp pick gravy train to take advantage of that stupid system.

Here's the thing.

The league is built on parity. The worst team can usually get into the playoffs with one good offseason.

Is this team going to be a Super bowl contender in one year?

Hell no.

But with our cap situation, we definitely can compete for the bottom two playoff spots. Won't get too far, but it's not unrealistic to think with some smart moves, Bears are in that conversation.

There is a difference between possible and probable.

It’s possible the Bears could be good next year. It’s not probable. Even though some are pushing that narrative.

They sold off all their best defensive players and are penny pinching because they have a bunch of dead money and ownership is cheap. They have a ton of money to spend and when they weren’t in full tank mode early in the season they were competing. Despite having like half the salary cap against whoever they were playing. They’ve also been in full tank mode for like that last 6 or so weeks so the games are pretty meaningless and there isn’t much to take from them. Young guys are getting reps so that’s good. The games are largely worthless though as far as trying to glean anything from them. I’m just hoping Fields doesn’t tear an ACL or something like that. If they spend big and hit on some draft picks they could turn it around. It more than likely takes more than a year though. But it’s the NFL, there’s only 17 games so it’s a small sample. Weird things happen when variance is so high. It’s like when baseball had that 50 game season during the pandemic and the Marlins made the playoffs. No way are they a playoff team in a 162 game season. But with the small sample of games crazy stuff happens. This is essentially every NFL season. Which makes those Patriot teams so crazy. Even though I guess you can point to that division being garbage as a major factor in their lengthy dominance.

When you have your franchise quarterback and good running backs on your roster, you are very ahead of the game compared to teams that do not. This should be an easy rebuild to get to the play-offs considering how weak the division is.

2-3 years at least. And by that maybe Fields is not as athletic or burned out. It was a great chance to develop him and improve his passing, but no, just let him run all over the field.

There are maybe only 5 players under contract next year that are legit starters in this league. I’m not saying pro bowl type players. I’m just saying day 1 starters on at least 14 other the teams.

To think you can acquire another ~17 legit day 1 starters in one offseason is beyond ridiculous. I pray for you next season. Your sundays are going to be incredibly disappointing.

This! But they refuse to see it and are rooting for losses. With the time it will take to rebuild, they might as well draft another QB. And get a new Coach and maybe GM.

What are you really arguing? That our players suck and people shouldn’t want more draft options so you can continue to complain?
