I am not a U2 fan, but it's kind of odd to say there are no modern bands that can fill a stadium considering they fill Soldier Field just about every year.
1 band doesnt prove anything

One is still more than none.
It's hilarious that you are claiming U2 as a modern band. They formed in 1980

Pulling them out of the equation, there is virtually no modern band that can fill massive stadiums night after night. Of course there are plenty of OLD Bands that can still do that 50 years after they formed (McCartney, Clapton, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Stones). LOLOLOLO

Please explain to me how filling a large stadium is proof of superior songwriting and musicianship.

If they're still around and producing albums, I would consider them modern.

Edit: At the very least, relevant.

maybe because in the good old days, the majority of fans didn't have shitty taste in music? </sarcasm>

1. Jimmy Buffet x4 but probably Atlanta as Fats Domino opened for him, man Fats had a lot of hits I had forgotten.
2. Tina Turner, more significant because of the ladies my buddy and I were with than the music
3. Huey Lewis and the News with Malissa Ethridge opening for them in Munich Germany, first concert that I went to where they served alcohol.
4. Blood, Sweat and Tears, River Fest in Chattanooga, man I love that band.
5. The Eagles x2, always an awesome concert but particularly so because I was near front row.

Honorable mentions:

Elton John was pretty amazing. Wife wanted to see George Michaels had front row seating with the Bangles opening for him. Chicago, well because it was Chicago.

lol

One argument that could be made is the majority of music buyers and by extension buyers of "music star merchandise" are demographically much, much younger. Tween fans of Avril, Bieber, Cyrus, Spears etc. A result of today's media and the nature of the business targeting these tween audiences more so than in the past.

But this a result of marketing and the business in general, not of a lack of quality music.

Yup, but ask yourself which of the bands popular today could fill a 18-25k stadium...........let me think........oh, none.
^This is what you said. You can go back and edit it or, as you have in the past, deny later that you ever said it. Trying to claim that U2 doesn't count because they are not modern or that they don't count because they are only one band is just sad and pathetic. It's ok to admit that you are wrong sometimes - it won't make anyone's opinion of you go any lower.

I would be skeptical of any band these days that does fill a stadium. Bell-shaped curve and all that

As I said earlier, I am not a fan of U2. I was just making a point to The Gipper.

Then that makes the Rolling Stones modern

I guess that depends on what you consider "modern". Are we talking 10, 20, 30 years ago? Since you seemed to have abandoned new music going all the way back to the mid 80's, I would have to assume that your answer is closer to 30 years.

The Stone's studio albums (not including compilations) range from 1964 to 2005, with 5 albums coming out after 1986. Yes, 1964 and the majority of their albums were from "classic rock" era, but can you say that "A Bigger Bang" shouldn't be considered a modern album? 2005 wasn't that long ago.

Just bought some tickets for the Dave Matthews band show in Toronto, I'm pumped!!! A great group of fantastic musicians with one of the best drummers that I've ever heard too!

Somewhere away from fucktards.
5. Kiss with Motley Crue opening, 1/1/83 @ Hulman center in Terre Haute, In. (saw them there in 1998 also, Psycho Circus tour 12/12/98)
4. Megadeth with Testament & Exodus @ Stubbs BBq, Austin, TX 2010.
3. Ozzfest 2004, Verizon Amphitheater in Northbrook, IL(?) Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slayer, Slipknot, Superjoint Ritual, Lamb of God, BLS
2. Pantera w/ Type O Negative, Danville, IL, 1995 (before Phil was getting really fucked up and kind of ruining the shows. I've seen Pantera 4 times, this was the first and the best performance IMO as a whole.)
1. Iron Maiden @ Verizon Amp., San Antonio, TX. May 2008

Honorable mentions:
Blue Oyster Cult w/ Cheap Trick and Aldo Nova, Danville, IL 1983 (saw BOC again in 1991)
Slayer with Killswitch Engage and Mastadon, @ the Murat in Indy 2004
Pantera w/ Slayer, Morbid Angel, Static X (Extreme Steel Tour 2001) Chicago @ the Aragon? Can't remember.
Motorhead w/ Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy, 2009 @ Stubbs BBq, Austin, TX

I never got to see Metallica in their heyday, and I am scared to go see them now because Lars' drumming would ruin it for me. And I've never got to see AC/DC, yet. Probably when the do a farewell tour.
