I have been to a zillion concerts so here are my favorites:

-Joe Cocker band circa 1992 at Poplar Creek theatre. Have been putting on monster shows since 1970. Huge, distinctive voice with a choir of chicks cooing in the background. His bands are tight as a drum musically. I also saw him in 1974 but this show was better

-Bob Seger, mid 80s. Saw him about 4 times. People have kinda forgotten him but he put out as many hits as anyone and filled 25,000 people stadiums night after night. Long shows tons of energy

-James Taylor. Have seen him 10 times and it's a great show. His songs remind me of various points in my life good and bad. Always has top notch musicians and their harmonies are flawless. He can rock out on occasion: steamroller is an example

-Clapton at Poplar Creek. Usual flawless show.

-The Band. Most of you never heard of them and I feel sad for you. They influenced a generation of musicians and were honored by their peers at the Last Waltz concert/movie. Clapton broke up Cream after hearing their Big Pink album saying this is the way music should be

My worst concerts:

-Led Zepplin mid 70s. Drunk and loose as can be. bad acoustics. Just horrible

Van Morrison is one of my favorites but his live shows can often be bad and he can be very temperamental. Saw him at the Auditorium in the 80s and it was so bad that we left

-Rolling Stones. Saw them during their drunk every night stage in 1977 after Mick Taylor left the band. Not good for me. too bad it was 1977 and not 1971 when they were the best band in the world

In no particular order:

-Roger Waters doing the entirety of Dark Side for one set and another set of his solo stuff.

-Opeth with Amorphis opening for them.

-Ozzfest '97 (Ozzy, Sabbath, Pantera, Type O, Machinehead, etc.).

-The CSO and Lyric Opera staging Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (the "Ring Cycle") in four nights over the course of a week and a half (that's about as much opera as anyone could possibly take in that period of time before cracking and going on a killing spree).

-Elton John and Billy Joel when they toured together, that was pretty fucking solid; although there are several of their "hits" that I can't stand and wish they'd leave off of their set lists...but oh well.

There's obviously a **** ton more, but those are some of the best I can think of off the top of my head.

I was totally there and I agree that was a lot of opera.

Started talking music in another thread, so I thought this may kill some time until FA>

Top 5 concerts attended:

Mine
1} Pink Floyd
2) Springsteen
3) Rolling Stones
4) Clapton
5A) Johnny Winters
5B) Robin Trower

How could you possibly place Clapton ahead of Trower?...Eric has always been overrated.

1. Stevie Ray Vaughan and brother Jimmy at the Holiday Star Plaza. This place only held 5,000, and you could walk right up to the stage.
2. Smashing Pumpkins, before they became popular and did old venues such as the Riv in Chicago.
3. Robin Trower at the Park West.
4. Robert Cray at Ravinia
5. Guns N Roses, old Poplar Creek venue.

Honorable mention, Jethro Tull at the UIC Pavilion.

I've seen Floyd, great show but venue sucked...Rosemont Horizon back in the 80's.

Yup, but ask yourself which of the bands popular today could fill a 18-25k stadium...........let me think........oh, none.

You're so out of touch with modern music it's almost comical. I mean, you're a cool dude. I'd buy you a beer or whatever. But you seriously need to get your head out of your ass when it comes to this "Nobody who's made music in the last 30 years is worth a shit" stuff. It's so short-sighted on your part.

Looks like we went to a lot of the same concerts.

Let me add one to the bad list, "saw" Traffic in the early 70's, and by "saw"I mean 20 minutes of tuning up, 20 minutes of incoherent random jamming, and then Steve Winwood staggering on stage, mumbling into the mike for a minute and then puking and passing out.

Early 70's. Good times.

As a general rule I'm not one to say things were better or tougher in my time. In fact, I feel sorry for young people today because it's so much harder to finance a middle class life. Jobs are more scarce and the best most can do is hope for the next 18 months of employment rather than 20 years when I was young. And no, I didn walk 20 miles uphill in the snow to school each day

But there is one area of life that was better back then than now and that's music. Music for the most part today is shit. Not a whole lot that's innovative. In fact, I'm surprised when some youngster thinks he is listening to a great song he assumes was recently written, only to find out it's a cover of a 40 year old song.

So, why is this? Partly because of the proliferation of file sharing and the artists not getting their money. Part of it is laziness on the part of the listener. Artist today are only expected to put out one good song while years ago the record companies and public expected 6-8 good songs per album

The last part is skills. Artist years ago spent many years working their way up from obscurity in nightclubs, bars etc. Today a star can be made by the proliferation of media in seconds. Most popular stars today can barely even play an instrument and rely on session men.

So, some stuff today is excellent, most is just shit.

Dont believe me? Look at the most popular stars today like Beiber, Myley Cyrus, Beyonce, goofy rappers and their massive world wide popularity and ask yourself if they have anywhere near the talent of the Bealtes, Led Zepplin, Hendrix, etc

Distribution (media) and the music business in general have changed a lot, for the worse in many ways. That does not mean there aren't a lot of great, innovative new musicians, singers, and songwriters. To find the good stuff now, word of mouth and trial and error play a much larger role. And that gets more difficult as you get older, get out less, and your interests, priorities, and responsibilities change. Even the craft of making music can be very different now, with guys like aphex twin, nine inch nails, etc.

My musical tastes have shifted a bit also, as I have gotten older. Rock and pop do not play as large a role anymore and my interest isn't as deep. And let's be honest, there were quite a few top 40 stars from the time period of which you are speaking (60s/70s) who were terrible.

I think there are still many young listeners out there with perfectly fine ears, tastes and discernment. Most discerning music lovers today also have a good appreciation of what came before.

There's a load of great new music out there omelet, it just isn't as marketable because the nature of the business is so different. But it's there.

Agreed, and I'm not saying there isnt good music being written now, it's just far less than it has ever been. I dont have the time or patience to find it.

Also, I appreciate young listeners that appreciate music written before they were born. I like to go on Youtube and look at various covers. Here is one of my favorite. Al Green circa 1972. I betting this kid's father turned him on to this

I am not a U2 fan, but it's kind of odd to say there are no modern bands that can fill a stadium considering they fill Soldier Field just about every year.

sorry, omelet, but that's like saying books these days suck because all you see are the NYT best-sellers and you don't want to use a kindle.
