Comparing a much lower tier performer to the top tier doesn't bring the lower tier performer up a tier.

Anyways, Ian Gillan > best voice of the era. :p

Something like that is highly subjective. Better than Rod Stewart (faces) or Freddy Mercury?

I’ve seen Ian G. live twice, great range and an icon in his genre.

Freddy M. was a generational talent on an entirely different level, no comparison.

Randy Bachman wrote the music for American Woman, he actually had a bit of an edge compared to that giant pussy Cummings.

Yup Cummings was quite the crooner, and a giant pussy. Did Plant forget to mention what a giant pussy Cummings is? Because anyone that knows his music is well aware of what a giant pussy he is.

Cummings is Barry Manilow that happened to know Randy Bachman so a few idiots give him rock credit. Burton Cummings is a soft rock, mellow, light as air giant pussy that only music illiterates think rocks. He does not, nor has he ever rocked, for a very brief time long ago he hung out with some guys that did. Giant pussy. The sad fact that you think Burton Cummings rocked, is a strong indicator of what you are (see above).

Um. First of all BC was a singer and piano player. His best work was when he collaborated with guitarists. He was a rocker first and foremost but didn't have that guitar buddy when he went solo. As for American Woman, all members of the band wrote the song. It started onstage when Randy broke a string and was retuning his guitar. He had the riff and the rest of the band joined in. Burton came up with the lyrics spontaneously. If you ever listen to early Guess Who you would realize Burton replaced

a Barry Manilow lead singer and rocked out. The rest is history. I don't think Plant ever called him a pussy. Quite the oppisite. Fake news.

Here's Burton pre Guess Who. Couldn't have been more than 17. Great garage band sound and raw singing. The kid rocked from the beginning.

Both are MUCH MUCH better songwriters than Gillan and the sum of Deep Purple. But vocal skills are still a tier bellow. All are great, it's just that IG has another full octave on, heck anyone I can think of from that era. He can sing warm tones like few others can, pitch perfect, clean when he wants(except not as crisp as a Daltrey or Mercury who can go full speed and then change direction), and he can go raspy. No effects added to the voice in the majority of songs.

*Sing along* with this, and I don't even think it's his best example, just a good example in a song good enough to make it on the charts.

But two top tiers admiring each other is cool.

I don't know man, AHHYAAA AHHEEEE is not singing, I realize it's personal preference and there is no right and wrong in a discussion like this, but I don't think he even touches Freddy Mercury's range. heck, I think Brad Delp is a better pure vocalist than Ian.

Freddy's lows are still effeminately high. I love him, but IMO that is not range, just a lot of highs. But anyways, Child in Time was just one song, get into JCSS or a number of other songs where he projects a different tone, Gillan has actual range. Low and high. I'm not even sure Freddy's highest is higher than Gillan, I think they hit the same octave.

I know all of this, and yes. I was using a live example as well. But again, it's nearly all highs, no lows, no bass. That's a lack of range. I love Freddy, but I think you're demonstrating his weaknesses more than strengths. Also, lots of effects, even if live. Effects, autotune, all that should be thrown out IMO because you don't get much of the voice.

Ozzy is in the same camp, where he sings nearly everything with DT reverb effects. I personally like it, but in a fair comparison of skill, it's natural voice vs natural voice. Highs and lows. That's what matters. We can subjectively say what we like more, but objectively we can measure things like range.

10 years rocking in the Guess Who a brief time? That's absurd. .51

Sorry man, respectfully disagree, as would most I think. Take a gander:
http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2010/09/impressive-vocal-ranges-of-6-rock-singers/

Freddie’s speaking voice was in the baritone range but he preferred singing in the tenor range. His range included F2 — E6, to F6 and F5.
Freddie’s vocals were over a four-octave range.

Four full octaves sounds about right for Freddy. Five is rare, Gillan had five full octaves. Laura Branigan also had five full octaves, but something about a certain higher voice that gets more appreciation, like Celine Dion's speculated six octave range. But I would make the same case with Mercury, he was very weak at lower pitch(not by comparison of other singers, but weak by comparison of his own range), like Dion. So if Mercury had that fifth octave, I'm not entirely sure I have ever heard him belt out anything at the lowest keys with the same power he can hit his highs.

So that's fine if we disagree. It's a fun chat. At least we agree Burton Cummings is nowhere on that list of top tier singers. ;)
