Team keeps losing character dressing room guys.

I don't like seeing Steeg go for a lot of reasons. And I was pretty sure Burke was going to nab him as he fits the Leafs system well right now. God damn it did Burke have to make my prediction come true.

As for Leaf prospects. They haven't drafted well in 20 years. LOL. We will see.

business business business cap cap cap cap. Bull shit.
Who exactly are these "character dressing room guys"?

Its funny that I was way more excited for the draft picks in the buff trade, and even though the leafs guys are further along....it's leafs picks and that is unsettling like TCD said.

Where did I say anything about him playing defense? Learn how to read before you criticize my opinion.

Your opinion on Versteeg is ludicrous and has been since you started it on Day 1.
Let me be the first to say so long FuckSteeg, I will NOT miss you. This guy had plenty of time to learn that his style in the offensive zone was reckless and selfish and led to more turnovers and odd man rushes than any other single player on our team. He's not that young or inexperienced, just too proud and stubborn to change. If Scotty and Q couldn't educate him no one will. Let's not forget his time with Boston and our minor league organization.

Toronto will love this little hot shot. Good riddance.
Count me in the "glad it was Steeger and not Sharp or Ladd or whomever" camp. Never was a fan. Very creative player, great hands, but mediocre hockey sense.

Again, I'm surprised by what we got in return. This Stalberg kid alone sounds like a perfect fit for us. Good size, great skater, $850K in salary. Can you ask for more?

I'm very impressed by what the front office did here. They got rid of $12 million in salary (assuming they dump Huet to Rockford) and got legit value in return with prospects (Stalberg & Morin especially and potentially DiDomenico) that could reap benefits down the road, not to mention the draft picks they got as well.

I tell you, if someone throws a crazy offer sheet at Niemi and we take the compensation and decide to chase Dan Ellis or Chris Mason for $2 million less in annual salary, I won't shed a tear at that either.

I'm excited. If Kyle Beach is as good as advertised and Stalberg continues to develop, I don't see why we cannot make a strong defense of the cup next year.

I was a cynic, you can now call me a convert.

Yea BigPete come on were you watching? Q is a defensive coach and trusted your "fuckSteeg", stubborn, reckless, and to stubborn to change more than many guys on this team seeing as he put him out there at the end of every game.

Versteeg is gifted more than most NHLer's IMO, and I hate to see him go, btw, this was his 2ND YEAR. Losing Versteeg is much more of a loss than Buff IMO, but that is a useless point.

Good post Whaler.

Bowman just said "Niemi and Hjarlmarsson are going no where" so I would take it they'll be signed before Noon.

Re: Versteeg/Sweatt to TORONTO For Stalberg/DiDomenico/Parad

Who are or were the "character guys"?

All of them. This is or was one of the tightest knit groups I have EVER seen in the NHL in my time of watching. "Character" goes beyond that guy who stands up and gives the motivational speach. It's about that and the guy who can joke around and keep things lose. Steeg was one of those guys..so was Sopel..Eager...Fraser and Buff.

We still have a lot of them but there will be new faces in that room and its going to take adjusting too. Even our Captain said so in an interview from the Olympic Gold party last week. He said that it's going to be very difficult to walk in and not miss all the guys who he also said were the tightest bunch of guys he had ever played with.

Hawks will be fine but I think we will see a rocky start from them this season. I know the core is what is important and the talent on the team is still there. THere are going to be question marks about some unity though as there always is when new faces show up and ones we were used to leave.

Harsh reality of pro sports...made worse by the cap.

Quote this then: **** off, I'm entitled to MY opinion.

Good riddance FuckSteeg. You could be a 70 point (30G 40A) guy if you didn't constantly dance with the puck by yourself at the blue line in the O-zone.

Re: Versteeg/Sweatt to TORONTO For Stalberg/DiDomenico/Parad

In a perfect world, we don't dump either player, Buff or Versteeg, but lets be honest, those players were chosen for a reason over Bolland and Sharp.

Both players have flaws. For Buff, its inconsistency. For Steeg, it's great natural talent, but a propensity for turnovers and reckless play at times.

Sharp and Bolland, for the money, are far more valuable to this team, plain and simple, both for the position they play and for the productivity they bring (assuming Bolland's back stays healthy).

No Hawk fan should be truly surprised by this move. Now that they moved both players, I'm more comfortable with the Buff trade because if they made the choice one vs. the other, I would have chosen to keep Buff, not Steeger. In the end, they had to deal both.

Great point TCD. Chemistry was NO DOUBT a huge factor into the Cup. Luckily you still have a LOT of that left.

I do think they'll miss the personalities of Buff and Steeg both on and off the ice. No doubt about it. Chemistry will start again in Sept and they will gel with the Leadership and experience on this team.

Hahah, it was his second year, he showed up big in his two seasons, and in the playoffs. Had he stayed and been here say in his 7th season, he would be VERY VERY good, and I would say 70 points.

I wish him the best in Toronto, poor guy, those moron fans are not gonna get his jokes at all.

Hells yes. Nobody thought we could win the cup with Niemi in net last June. I don't see either player as a significant downgrade to be honest.

Depends on how much Niemi was to ask for. I don't think he'll be greedy to continue playing in Chicago for now. Just a guess though.

Hopefully our days of over paying goalies are over when Rocky sees the paycheck he's sending to Rockford.

Somebody send game videos of this past years playoffs to Pete as a present from all of us at IHN.

Oh and by the way, you are entitled to your opinion. Would love for it to be accurate at some point. You keep working on it, you'll get one right one day.

Re: Versteeg/Sweatt to TORONTO For Stalberg/DiDomenico/Parad

http://blogs.thescore.com/nhl/2010/03/1 ... severance/

"DiDomenico had been a force throughout the playoffs, but his season ended on that play as he tried to win a race to an iced puck. Instead, he broke his femur and shattered his kneecap on the play and was sidelined for nearly a year. As DiDomenico was carted away on a stretcher in what must have been incredible pain, he said over and over “I want the game” to his teammates, who went on to win the series in seven games."
