Re: Versteeg/Sweatt to TORONTO For Stalberg/DiDomenico/Parad
It's sad for me to see these guys leaving. They will remain special to me because of what they, along with every other member of this team achieved this year. And I agree that they knew they had to win it
this year because they may never get another chance to do it together.
I'll be following Buf, Versteeg, Eager etc. on their new teams. I'll be seeing Versteeg a lot because where I live most of the games on TV are Leaf games. Jesus, I can't believe I may be rooting for a Leaf player. Something just seems wrong with that.
It's hard sometimes to see players leave. I remember Bobby Hull in 1972. Was surprised that in 1973 we still went to the Finals without him.
The other players that come to mind are Savard, Roenick and Belfour. I
still don't know why they had to go.
What is nice with this team is that we have a very talented core group - we just have to lock up the goaltending position. Hopefully Niemi won't be asking for an outrageous amount of money. Surely he realizes that even though the Hawks won the Cup with him, other teams won't pay a fortune for him seeing that many people called the goaltending in the Finals the worst in NHL history. I don't happen to agree with that, but ...
I wouldn't pay Niemi more than 2.75 mil a year - lets say $8 million over three years.
Rookie goalies have a tendency to blow up in their second year - players figure out their weaknesses. Niemi definitely needs coaching, in the Finals he seemed to react too quickly and find himself out of position. Poor kid, he must have been nervous as hell though - he seemed much calmer in the first two rounds, especially against Nashville where he stole a couple of games. He may turn out to be the real deal. Time will tell.
Many teams in this league would love to have either a Toews, Kane or Hossa - we have all three ! Many teams in this league would love to have a Keith or Seabrook - we have both of them!
I would really, really hate to see Sharp go. Every goal he scores seems to be an important goal - game tying, go ahead or winning goal. I'd like to see his statistics in that area.
We have to keep Sharp!
After a month, I'm
still in a dream. Just a couple of years ago I thought I'd never see a Stanley Cup win in my lifetime!
