Hells yes. Nobody thought we could win the cup with Niemi in net last June. I don't see either player as a significant downgrade to be honest.
Really? Really? Nobody? Maybe IHF can be a witness? Grimson?

Sucks to see Steeger go. He sometimes made selfish moves but he is young he'll learn. It sucks he has to go, but the Hawks need cap space. Hope Ladder is back.

You don't know much about Mason then. He looks good from afar, but far from good. People in the Lou say he is why the Blues didn't suck this year, but then JD let's him go? That doesn't make sense, he was not a cap casualty. That should tell you he's not that good, Nashville let him go to, remember? Niemi is the answer.

One person out of hundreds, thousands? Good for IHF. All I am saying is that I think the Hawks could have won the Stanley Cup with a lot of different goalies and Chris Mason and Dan Ellis are two of them.

Yea, I was always a proponent of an average to good goalie playing well behind this team could definitely win the cup. I was wrong on Huet though, way wrong.

I'm not sure on either of those. Rinne maybe.

You guys are misunderstanding me. I don't want to see Niemi leave, not at all, but if he gets a $4.5 million dollar offer sheet, then see you later Antti.

That's all I'm saying. I think that money could be better spent elsewhere.

I can't believe how much after a cup after all these years you can rip a guy so hard after he leaves, seriously?

Ya some turnovers, what do you expect...2nd year..geez. He scored some timely goals for us this season and postseason.

I'm actually a little irritated you're not showing much respect to the guy. If you don't enjoy his play, so be it. But he just was a vital part in a stanley cup. I will root for all these guys for the rest of their careers, no matter what happens or where they go. Just as long as it's not against the hawks of course.

I agree, I am just confident it will be 2.5-3.

Sucks to lose another guy, but such are the wages of the new NHL. Good luck with the Leafs, Kris. Don't drink the stupid juice while you're up there!
Who are or were the "character guys"?

All of them. This is or was one of the tightest knit groups I have EVER seen in the NHL in my time of watching. "Character" goes beyond that guy who stands up and gives the motivational speach. It's about that and the guy who can joke around and keep things lose. Steeg was one of those guys..so was Sopel..Eager...Fraser and Buff.

We still have a lot of them but there will be new faces in that room and its going to take adjusting too. Even our Captain said so in an interview from the Olympic Gold party last week. He said that it's going to be very difficult to walk in and not miss all the guys who he also said were the tightest bunch of guys he had ever played with.

Hawks will be fine but I think we will see a rocky start from them this season. I know the core is what is important and the talent on the team is still there. THere are going to be question marks about some unity though as there always is when new faces show up and ones we were used to leave.

Harsh reality of pro sports...made worse by the cap.
Why bother with a response, a very good one I might add. You're too nice. BTW, thats the same poster that had Huet in Vezina conversation during the regular season.

Any player from the 2010 Stanley Cup winners will always have a special place in my hockey heart. Borrowing from The Committed Indian, whether it's VerStud or Country Stupid, good luck to Kris Versteeg. Unless he's playing the Hawks.

Solid post and I agree. I'll miss seeing Buff, Steeg, Sopel and even Eager around the ice. All played a role winning the first Cup in 49 years. Still can't believe I was alive and there to witness it!

Agree, we all knew guys were leaving and most of us knew it was the ones that have been traded, no need for the bashing, either way, Versteeg could just shove his ring up those people's asses.

Steeg also played the "pest" role in the playoffs almost perfectly. He and Bolland were great at it.

Damn rights Steeg was a solid part of the Cup win. He made up for his turnovers in other areas. And his turn overs were never really that looming. They like to be blown up by fans.

Somebody send game videos of this past years playoffs to Pete as a present from all of us at IHN.

Oh and by the way, you are entitled to your opinion. Would love for it to be accurate at some point. You keep working on it, you'll get one right one day.
Sorry if I don't want to wait 7 years for a talent ridden player to learn how to play a team game so he can score 70 points. He will never 'learn', mark my words.

Feel free to send the videos, I would love to educate your arrogant ass on how often he turned over the puck.

Well, as a resident of the Metro Atlanta area, I have 3 new reasons to go see the Thrashers more than once a season.
