What I would do in the Offseason
Do you not think we need a starter?
He is owed 23 million the next two years, and his 13 million dollar team option becomes a player option if he is traded. He isn't a bad starter, and he is more of a middle of the rotation guy then a top of the rotation guy. I guess the argument could be made that if you could get him for 10 million the next season which takes Pena's money. And then invest the other bit into Fielder that wouldn't be bad option.
I don't think we need a frontline starter no. I personally am fine with our rotation when healthy. Health has been the issue. Its not a great rotation but it's not bad either.
The way I look at it is Wilson is probably a 4-5 win player. Fielder is probably a 6-7 win player.
Wilson essentially replaces Cashner/Wells next year. Two players who in my opinion are worth probably 2ish wins each. So basically getting Wilson only nets us 2-3 wins.
Fielder on the other hand basically replaces Bryan LaHair. Someone who is probably the epitome of a replacement player. Lets say he is worth no wins. So that means Fielder nets us 6-7 wins. Or approximately here times as many as Wilson.
That kinda how I see it. I would rather sign an inning eater to replace one of our pitchers when they get hurt. Say someone like Marquis but cheaper.
I just think given our team you get more bang for your buck with a big first baseman rather than a big starting pitcher.
