It is...def for the Cubs. He's a leader and every team needs that. The Cubs do have Pena too, but more the better. It keeps the team together.
really waldo?

soriano and byrd dont really have a "ceiling" anymore..atleast in regards to potential considering they are both well over 30 and declining...
does colvin have a higher ceiling "productivity" wise over soriano and byrd? hard to really say when you're comparing completely different age groups...
if i'm looking long term..i'll take colvin over those two..

A Leader in the clubhouse is NOT an ingredient to winning a title.
You can have a bunch of cancers on the team, and still win the world series. that has been documented many times.

i want to see yo evidence foo
True, but besides Fielder, I don't see anyone else worth overpaying for. :shrug:Fisch,
The key to a free agent bonanza is getting the right players.
Tex can't lose a starter as that's their weakest position. They'll overpay him and he'll accept the contract before he hits FA.
the question is, what does Byrd do for ya?
What is with all the Barney and Colvin love?
If they are both starters for the Cubs next year I am going to be an extremely unhappy guy.
Agreed. I don't mind Barney starting at 2B given his plus defense and cheap cost if it means that they can go out and get a big time free agent or two. However, Barney isn't the longterm answer at either middle infield spot fulltime.
Colvin might be useful especially in a platoon, but to pencil him in as an everyday player based on what we've seen at the big league level is very premature or asking for another hole at a premium offensive spot.
I could LIVE with that but only if he hit 8th in the lineup every day.
I can't wait til Jackson is up. He's mashing at Iowa right now.

The Cubs don't really have a leadoff hitter that isn't already considered a 5th outfielder.
288 isn't a average.
Ideally you'd like Barney near the bottom of the order, but I don't think it's a problem he's hitting 2nd.Batting average is only one component of a player's offense, and the rest of Barney's numbers are pretty terrible. Especially the most important number if you are going to hit at the top of the lineup which is OBP.
