It got us to the playoffs. That's the goal. I don't see how it did not work. Sure, we didn't win the World Series, but you're basing that it didn't work off of 6 games. Sample size. The goal is just to get to the playoffs. We did that. Twice.

who cares?

The team is not financially strong enough to go ahead and do another spending spree. If you want to keep thinking that, great! Just dont poop in your pants when it doesnt happen.

less than what it is now that is for sure.

By how much though because there is a big difference between it being 5 million less and 20 million less which both would fall into the definition you stated.

cubs are a big market..but they arent the yankees or red sox

you cant rely on trying to make big hauls because half of them the players you bring in have some issue in adjusting to the new team and/or fall off after one or two good years..

sure you may have a 1-2 year window of really good play but then players leave, age,etc...and then you think, wait, we have a couple of great guys coming in to the majors this year that can be a youthful injection and are really promising..no wait...then you remember they were traded in a deal to get a big time prospect that has become washed up

now im not saying the cubs shouldnt go after some big names..but you have to have a balance in regards to the farm system and getting free agents..

15 million atleast if not more. they maybe baseball idiots, but they know what the forecasted economy is going to be like. Ricketts is not in good shape as far as his financial situation so adding that with the forecast is the main reasons to not spend.

That would be a very substantial cut, and if that cut is made I think that makes it that much harder to keep the front office in tact. If the payroll is slashed and the current leadership is maintained there is going to be a lot more anger.

this is the big key...whether or not there is a decision to change the personnel..moves within the FO may be a relative indication of what we'll see in free agency

id keep quade to be the scapegoat. that why i was also in favor of him over sandberg last season. everyone thats not Special person saw that this team was gonna be fucking :turrible:. i just wish sandberg saw it the same way and chilled in the minors for a few more years until the cubs had a decent team to field. instead he had to act like a fucking *****.

pretty sure i was like the only person against sandberg last year. well thats my reasoning.

timing would have been bad for sandberg or even girardi when that was discussed. sandberg is better off in the minors to take over someday a team that has some potential. this team would have kicked him out of the game, and his reputation would have been shot. he would never land a gig again if they chose him. they would rather have the "PR" happy go lucky manager who is what you said, the scapegoat.

It didn't work? Funny, I could have swore we made the playoffs. Twice.

Yeah, a .316 OBP out of the 2 spot is a real plus!
Keep living in 2007 and 2008. It didn't work. It won't work signing Fielder and other top free agents.

Like I said Ideally I'd like to see Barney hitting 8th on a good team, but guess what??

The Cubs aren't a good team right now. So I could give 2 flying fucks where Barney hits now.

:obama:

What's the difference with what the Cubs do now???

Barney's the best option at 2B right now, though Dewitt and Baker are options as well.

I can't see the hate for a guy whose hitting 288 on a 20 under 500 team. It's not like Barney is costing the team games now.

Same thing with Campana, dude can run, yet is already considered a 5th outfielder.

Campana's ceiling may be only as high as Juan Pierre's, but that's still good enough to start in the majors and be a productive player. Plus he'd be the first basestealing threat for the Cubs since

:cubstroll:

Juan Pierre.

WTF

The goal is to win the the world series.

If we make the playoffs and lose its a failure. Just not as big of one as not making the playoffs.

What the hell is so hard about that to understand?

To win the World Series team has to get into the playoffs. So the main goal is to get into the playoffs. I dont consider a playoff team a failure. Once in the dance anything can happen. So yes signing Fielder and other FA will help towards the goal of making playoffs while just praying that prospects work wont.

It's different to be a contending playoff team, be competitve in their games. The Cubs really weren't in 07-08 playoffs for the most part. Things bit em in the ass in the playoffs, and no team, even the 08 Cubs team, could overcome errors.

2008 is perfect example about how playoffs anything can happen. Cubs were the best team in NL for 161 games (had 1 gamed rained out that year that didnt get made up) then in playoffs for 3 games they played like crap. So as long as a team makes it they can even beat the best team in baseball in a 5 or 7 game series. Thats why just getting to the playoffs is the main goal. Then see what happens in the playoffs.
