I think that is my favorite thing about him... absolute beast... well that, and he is just such a smart player. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is a recent quote from Q about which Hawk does he see becoming a coach some day, and he said Hossa and noted that he is such a student of the game. I think you see that in his influence on Kane and clearly he provides leadership in the room if Q is saying that about him.[/quote]

Truer words have never been spoken. Compare the way Kaner backchecked before Hossa to the way he backchecked and played D after Hossa, Kane looks like a completely different player.

He does, but I'm not sure how much I buy it's Hossa. Kane knew leaving last season where exactly his game needed improvement. With all the great two way players on this team, there is no doubt that rubs off to some extent.

They're terminal, infinite, there, if I'm thinking of the same Planet Lovetron.

It is a bit disconcerting at first.

It's really hard to slack on the defensive side of the game when you're playing with a guy like Toews. He will make even average defensive forwards look like they're lazy and worthless on defense.

The guy just brings it that hard every night.

I agree totally what you two said. And I like how they have built the Hawks, with players willing to work hard both ways. Kane was night and day this season compared to his earlier years and I can only see him getting better on the defensive side. He and the rest of the team saw the results of what responsible two-way play can bring and coach Q is a great guy to make sure the new guys buy into it.

It's really fun to see that the Hawks have finally settled for a style and gotten the pieces that work with it and keep rolling it. Are the Icehogs also employing similar philosophies as the big club? It would make sense to have similar styles so the transition isn't too big.

With Bowman at the helm you can bet on it as he's done the same with Detroit/Grand Rapids their players were ready to step up when called on.

My gut feeling was that Kane was going to come into this season with a stronger two-way game regardless, because as you said, he knew where he wanted to improve and IMO he also had some additional motivation to shut up the haters. My comment about Hossa's influence was derived from quotes I recalled from an article on the official site where Kane talked about watching & learning from Hossa's game, etc. My thought is that Kane was going to come in and show he was going to play hard at both ends, and he saw a new opportunity to observe a guy like Hossa (as I'm sure he already did with Toews) and he capitalized on it. Team Defense was such a way of life for the Hawks this year and was a key component of the Cup win.

Kane has also said watching Havlat turn defense in offense influenced him.

brainfart -- that's what I meant -- I guess I haven't seen it in so long, the image was fading from its semi-permanent etching on my retina...
