The stuck in the 80s mentality for me is more of the people who are saying they would rather the Bears draft a quarterback in rounds two or later or settle for some trashier quarterback off the scrap heap because they think there is such a thing as too high of a cost to get a legit top five franchise quarterback.
never mind the fact that once you have the quarterback even if you sell the rest of the team to do so, you can then build around that quarterback and by the very nature of having a quarterback like that you will likely be in playoff contention more years than not as you are rebuilding.
But people bitch and cunt, and some of the same people who are whining in one thread about something are the same ones who in another thread did exactly as I described regarding having a mentality of team building and player acquisition that is mentally stuck in a period prior to free agency and the modern NFL
I agree with you, you can build a team around a franchise QB. So yes, I think it would be worth it to lose some other good players to get Wilson or Watson. But it's likely Bears will have to trade 1st Rds, and make some cuts to afford Wilson.
Maybe they can trade Robert Quinn. ?
With Wilson, being age 32, and Pace/Nagy being on the chopping block, I'm sure they don't want to rebuild, but rather keep as many good young (and good vet) players as possible to make a run this year.
I got ya... in the 80s some teams did well with top defenses and running games, like the 85 Bears being #1 in both. So I'm sure that mentality lingers. They should still know better, as McMahon was the 5th overall pick, and made the Probowl in 85.
