I want a 5 year contract for starters, maybe 12 million a year and then escalating to 18 Million with incentives?

MLBTR suggested $14 Million a year for 3 years.

Those contracts are crazy. He has been worth 18M, 6M, and so far 14M in 2010. So figure he has been worth on average of 14M per season (weighting the higher ones more). Going off the 40/60/80 arby lines he would make something along the lines of 2011: 5.5 Million 2012: 8.5 Million 2013: 11 Million then be a free agent in 2014 where he is worth 14 million. So assuming a 5 year deal you are all looking at it would be something worth 53 million. Cubs shouldn't be signing him unless he is cheaper than that, and you never know about injuries.

I would just assume to go through arbitration.

Something like Brian McCann's contract would be good IMO

That I would do in a heartbeat.

I meant 12 at the end of the contract, I forgot to say that it escalates as a slightly backloaded contract. And I meant a few million is incentives this year, starting at like 6, then 8, then 10, then 12, etc. or something along that line. That was what I meant in my post.

Alright that makes a little more sense.

I wouldn't sign him to anything more than four years for 40 million with incentives boasting like 50 mil. He's coming of 2 great years, and a not so good sophomore slump, so if we were to sign him to 6+ years, history tells us that he'll have one good year in there some where and then suck to shit the rest of the time.

I wouldnt even think of paying him that much at all..

He hasn't put up two consecutive good years yet.

Looking at the figures tossed around here, and thinking about the situation a little more, I think I'd wait until next winter to sign Soto to an extension. Let him have another good year before we buy out the rest of his arbitration years (and realistically the rest of his productive years).

Also, I'm not against trading him if the right offer comes along. His trade value will never be higher.

If it's Hendry, he will be paid for a 3 year contract for 145 million backloaded to where he gets 143 million of that in the final year

He's amassed these numbers hitting in the bottom of the order and losing ABs to the terrible Koyie Hill. Lou and Quade are naive enough to bat him 8th when he should be hitting 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.

I agree that Hill is terrible, Blanco was a good backup/refresher imo, but why have your catcher hit in the top of the order when it's best to have a balanced lineup?

If he's one of our best hitters why wouldn't he bat higher up?

It's not a LAW that a catcher has to bat low.

Position should never dictate where a player hits in the lineup.

Of course I say that, but Dusty Baker has been doing it for years.
