I got an ancient soldering iron in a random 5 dollar box of shit from an estate sale....massive tip, threadbare cord and a wooden handle with no on/off switch.

I have not tried it yet but I am dying to.
Exactly what I have. ?

Recommendation for a router? Also planers? I have some analog planers but is there a good powered version u use?
I have the Makita plunge router and it does a really nice job either by itself or attached to the table. I also have a Bosch hand held that I use a lot. I really want a Festool but I just can't do it as long as this one is running. I bought a HF electric hand planer just to see if I like it and I don't so anything that has to be planed either goes in my delta 12 incher or I do it by hand. I have gotten pretty good at joining wood so I don't need to do a lot of planeing.

As far as a lathe goes....ya got me. I don't own one. Yet.....lol. I did some lathe workback when I was a youngin but nothing in the last 20 years. Something I would like to get but I am starting to run out of room in the shop. I would have to displace one of my grow tents which aint gonna happen anytime soon.

If I recall correctly, Craftsman hand tools were made by the company that sells them as Rigid once the craftsman contract was up.

Kenmore was made by different manufacturers at different times. A repair site for appliances I once used (I believe it was Samurai Repairman) said "if you have a Kenmore, the first thing you need to know is who made it. And don't say 'Sears'. Sears don't make nothin' but money!" (once upon a time).
Oh yeah, Sears didn't actually make those brands, but they were top quality, Sears didn't put those brands on low end stuff....a variety of manufacturers made the appliances...when I moved out many moons ago, my parents gave me their old Kenmore washer and dryer...they were almost 20 years old by that time, so my parents upgraded for themselves...I had them for another 5, and sold them with the place when I moved, and they still worked fine...the hand tools were once made by New Britain Forge, which was part of Stanley when all the Stanley tools were still made here....the Roadhandler tires were made by General Tire.

No you don’t and no you didn’t
You are too stupid to know that every Home Depot associate has the ability to discount anything $50. So, I talked him into a $50 discount on a drill that was already on sale

Then, last week, I negotiated $50 off a ceiling fan with the store manager. Too bad you have no skills

OK, I don't want to turn this into a shopping thread, so I'll stop, but I just oppped into an estate sale 15 minutes from me because Iw anted to act like I was doing somwthing before watching 7 hours of football, and they had a Ryobi compund miter saw marked $70, and today is half price. So, just as an example, as TBD suggested, you could start with a minimal investment and invest later if you're hooked.

I just swapped out a toggle switch for a rocker switch on these bad boys... and it was not the tool for the job. Way too big. It was like swatting a fly with a buick.

HF and Ryobi are comparable. I think Ryobi is made a little better but I can positively say as a person whose cordless drill was used almost every day at work you don't want either because they won't last. But for a home shop they would be perfect. All I have been trying to say is that some people decide they are going to start woodworking and immediately go out and spend 10K on tools and then find out they don't enjoy it and sell the stuff for a nickel on the dollar. My first tools were all HF shit until I decided I loved what I was doing. As an example a good 4 foot clamp is about 40-50 dollars. A HF is about 10 and it will get you buy for a year or two.

Now when I buy tools I shop according to need. If I need a tool for a one time thing I head straight to HF. If I plan on using it on every project I head to Grizzly, Delta, Jet, etc. A simple table saw at HD is 350.00 Get them on Craigslist even less. Also FB marketplace. A basic saw stop is 3500.00 dollars just to start. I can't tell you how many times I have wished I had a 24 inch planer but

is a bit much. And this one doesn't come close to the most expensive. So I get by with my 500.00 delta.

So....spend accordingly. You can always upgrade. But if you don't have the tools needed to do the job at all you will soon lose interest trying to figure out how to accomplish something that requires a specific tool.
I ran across this dude on YouTube that took some Harbor Freight bar clamps and made some improvements to them.

Seems like a good idea. I'm gonna try it. Better than dropping the coin on Bessey at this stage like you're saying.

Where are you going to set up shop? Basement? Garage?
Airflow would be another tip- getting the sawdust out of the air or the fumes from finishing the wood.

I needed negative pressure in my garage for painting some vehicles, so I took an old furnace fan, wired it to an on off switch and built it in to a box that holds a filter on the side with the intake and has about a 10x16 output.
I set it up facing out a window for negative pressure in the room when painting and can turn it around for positive pressure if I need it.

If you are interested in building something like that I just replaced one of the furnaces in my new place and have an extra fan laying around if you can't find one. You would just have to come get it.
Garage. I just spent the whole weekend cleaning it, and still a lot more work to be done. But it's getting there. I have way too much shit. There's no window out there, but I'll probably end up moving crap out into the driveway and throw a canopy up or something for sawdust and fume purposes.

For smallish dusty projects, I bought some 5 mil. Plastic sheets for a couple bucks a pop at menards.
Spread them out, stapled them to a little 2" board and rolled them up.
Hang the top boards on nails and the bottom boards give weight to hold them down...then I just roll em up and put them away in a minute.
Instant dust room.

I have read where this is done. Do you go to different stores? It would seem that they would have you fill something out. Or is there a limit number of times you can redeem said discount? Seems like they are giving away a ton, or exposing themselves to it. Then again, I am sure they ran the numbers.

Lol......These are 2 of my HF clamps I am using on my sons golf ball display. As you can see I modified them as well....they will twist if you don't do it. They work but the screw drives will try your patience as they tend to bind.

Edit: the clamps displayed at the bottom of the youtube picture are about 50 bucks each.

Their ability to provide the "courtesy" discount is at their discretion. I try to negotiate with the department or store manager. I smile a lot and turn it into a little game. I do this everyday with one product/service and I did it for 40 years. It's my hobby and I can say that no one buys shit for less than I do. all the way from a $100k Audi down to my monthly garbage bill....I love the process

I have the sudden urge to start building shit. I don't have a ton of tools, but probably enough to reasonably get started - drill, impact driver, sander, miter saw, circular saw, etc. Gonna pick up some clamps and other random shit over the weekend. I'll most likely add more tools like a router, table saw, planer, jointer, etc in the coming months but I want to see how much I enjoy it and what I can do with minimal tools before I commit a bunch of cash to it.

Any woodworkers here? Advice?
Measure twice cut once...that sounds simplistic but its the best advice there is

They grant the discount so you'll go away.
