Thornton had tried to elbow him high just before he cross checked him. I have Zero problem with Toews sticking up for himself. None.

This.

Above all, Jumbo is a bully. And bullies can suck a dick. It doesn't matter that Toews didn't whoop his ass, he stood up to him and said "**** off and PLAY hockey. Don't be a fucking ****."

Last time we will ever see Jumbo **** with Toews, take that to the bank.

I will, because I honestly doubt that. Let's be honest, if you were messing with someone your entire career and you finally fight them and they don't kick your ass? You'd still mess with them.

Again with this, I liked the fact that Toews stuck up for himself, I just don't believe it was the right time. If he was that pissed he should have dropped the gloves immediately when Thornton was fucking with him. Might have saved the team those penalties instead of crosschecking him and then obviously instigating the fight. It was dumb... I know any fan would defend his actions, but from another perspective it's just bush league. Anyone that really believes it had an outcome on the game is out of their mind, it was Toews taking liberties (meaning selfish) on a player that has messed with him his entire career, regardless of where the team stood. It was the right move at the wrong time... luckily it didn't effect the game thanks to the fact that the Sharks have sucked lately.

The fact that it didn't effect the game, wouldn't have mattered in the least in the big picture, and nothing serious came of it tells me it was absolutely the right time.....

It certainly would have helped if JT had whooped Jumbo's ass, but almost no one is capable of that (the dude is rather big). I think Jumbo is a bully but he still understands the old code enough to know that he should focus on playing and not on harassing someone. Standing up to a bully, knowing full well the consequences, almost always earns you the respect of the bully.

Toews has three fights in six (5+) seasons against another team's captain, Iginla; another team's captain, Backes; ...and you guessed it, another team's captain, Thornton.

At this wreckless pace, He'll've (He will have) fought every team's captain by 2066. *

* Does not include expansion teams or how often a team's captaincy changes, which are variables beyond my control.

How do you judge when is the right time from your couch watching on television?

What's wrong with being selfish sometimes? The person that is always selfish is the problem.

The judging from the sideline bothers me because it is so damn easy from the sideline to say Toews should have picked a better time to stand up. Toews pulled Thornton off the ice for 5 minutes and yes Toews was off the ice for 9 minutes but Toews' team is deeper than Thornton's team so San Jose was at a disadvantage more than the Hawks.

I am going to try to respect your opinion but it's definitely easier to make the judgement you call for when you ain't the one getting hit upside the head.

You are probably correct that this will not necessarily stop Thornton in the future from going after Toews but who gives a damn...that night Toews stood up for himself which was out of the norm and it's okay....it's an isolated incident that happen in the spur of the moment.

The only reason I didn't think it was the right time is because Toews is the one that committed a penalty (cross-checked him) then fought him (instigator)... why didn't he just jump all over Thornton immediately after getting punched in the back of the head like many are claiming that is the reason Toews was fired up? Why did he go out there and hack around for a minute or two? That's the only problem I had with it. If he wants to retaliate on a cheap shot, or defend himself, that's fine but taking a double minor and chasing Thornton around just made it look worse than it could have been.

You're right though, without being on the ice it's easy to judge, but that's just the way I saw it. I don't think it's wrong for Toews to fight, I just thought the timing was off. If he would have jumped Thornton off the bat he never gets the cross-checking penalty, maybe he still gets the instigator though, or maybe not depending on what the refs see.

I wonder if that minute or two before he picked the fight were due to the small angel and devil on his shoulders telling him what to do.

I am sure he was pretty conflicted on his response before taking action. Especially action well outside his norm.

My bad....I totally get your point about the right time now. It does bug the hell out of me when a player does not wait for the right time knowing there is a bad instigator rule in place....I totally get that point. Like Bollig last night could have waited and picked his spot after the hit on Kruger but for some reason it is the way they do it.

How often does a pissed off person evaluate every single possible repercussion of an action prior to acting?

I evaluate all the time when I'm pissed off and if I did not evaluate, my wife would have been killed at least 100 times.

This is why Toews got lucky. Holy Shit! Great tilt, but man that's scary to think of Toews as Benn...

Unlike Toews, I'm sure Benn didn't ask for permission, either.

I seriously hope John Scott watches that fight and gets reminded of what to do. That was beautiful.
