For real, it was a stupid decision by one of the greatest players the Hawks will ever see. He didn't get hurt, we still won, there really is nothing to talk about, except **** Joe Thorton. Get some pants that fit bro.

How is the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks getting into a fight with someone 2x his size NOT something to talk about?

I am now indifferent on the situation but I would bet there is a thread on every Blackhawks related message board about this fight.

Because nothing came of it. Maybe a little discussion is appropriate, and a chuckle, but its over and done with, with no harm done.

Gotcha, it does not matter that he gets abused in the head and neck area when in front of the net or along the boards 10-20 times a game, but heaven forbid he gets engaged in a fight once every three years because of the potential of head trauma.
<

Of course it matters.. If he's getting elbowed or punched in the head, there should be penalties called. That's part of the problem too, that's cropped up a couple different times just off the top of my head this season. That shit happens all the time. This isn't an all or nothing argument, which people here make into waaay too often.

Those should be penalties when they happen. it shouldn't take having to take a penalty yourself, or a fight, to get the other guy recognized for his bullshit. This is a big problem in the NHL to me. You don't call diving and the penalty in which the diver was trying to get. You just call diving. You don't call unsportsmanlike conduct for something stupid like shooting the puck into the net after a whistle and then call roughing on someone going after him, but wouldn't have called any of it if nothing happened. Earlier this season, you don't wait until Keith goes after Dejardins to call that major penalty on him, because they weren't going to call ANYTHING until Keith did that. That's horrible. There was another example of it today at the end with Oduya, which could have changed that game completely. It's bad. Really, really bad.

And it's either the officials are really just that dumb, and that's bad enough, or it's even worse, where they see and allow things like that to happen, they knowingly NOT make those calls only UNTIL the other team does something, which only creates more reckless behavior, more potential injuries, more problems overall. It's probably a combination of both.

The thread isn't stupid. The articles from Jay Zwaski and the "realfansprogram" are fucking comical, dumb and just plain ignorant.

I can only laugh at the ignorance. I'm sure I have some in this thread blocked so I can't read it.

Seabrook should NEVER endanger his TESTICLES trying to block a SHOT. HE will NEVER be able to make little Blackhawk babies!

Not to mention holy shit he concusses one of his testicles he might have to retire! We never win the game today!

Great post RK.

Regardless of how you feel on what happened... it's still worth a discussion.

PMX can go blow himself if he thinks otherwise.

Would that be considered an "Inner Body" injury?

Well then what if Toews would've knocked him out in one punch...then Marleau tried jumping in..and Toews knocks him out in one punch

And now, Toews has a new found skill of fighting, becoming the best fighting top line center in the league!

I'm really torn on this.

On one hand I'm very happy Toews stood up for himself and told the world he was sick of getting pushed around like some scrub. (Also, this makes me wonder if/how Toews is one of those guys who gets the benefit of the doubt from the refs like the superstars in the NHL and NBA do?)

On the other hand, I'm worried that one good shot from Jumbo Joe and we start comparing Toews to Lindros and for the wrong reasons.

Hopefully people will be less inclined to run at Johnny now that people know he's willing to drop 'em with a guy twice his size.

And please if my line is reasoning is off, explain it to me. I don't want to pretend that I know a whole hell of a lot about hockey yet, so any tutelage is welcome.

Sorta the inverse of Mikita's career with the Hawks. I like it.

...I hope it happens.

I think Toews should retire now before he does get a concussion and hurts the team. I mean there is a chance of it happening so he might just want to retire and not take chances

Yeah, again, the all or nothing arguments that come from so many discussions on here. Ridiculous. It's completely different if he gets hurt simply playing hockey, doing what he does best. Taking part in fighting is completely different, and the reasons why that even happened make it worse. The way fans just accept that is mind boggling. Someone actually said they'd be okay if he gets hurt while fighting and never plays again. There's no comparison to things like blocking shots.

When I say all or nothing, I'm talking about the kind of examples people are coming up with to prove me wrong: Toews should never play, he should never check, he shouldn't play in the corners or in front of the net, Seabrook shouldn't block shots, etc. That kind of stuff.

When the problem isn't that he plays like that and could get hurt from playing like that. Any player can get hurt on any play. But fighting is different. That can be avoided, willingly. It's twofold, it's on the player to know that it's not worth risking (especially if you just came off a season being shortened by concussions) and it's on the officials and the league to not let it get to that point from not calling penalties and/or only calling penalties when the other team reacts, which in turn, in a lot of cases, gets that reacting team an equal or bigger penalty. That doesn't solve anything. That only makes things worse. You see it all the time. You can't tell me that's not a huge problem. There are complaints about it every fucking game.

What do you think would change Joe Thornton's play in that game? A fight from Toews or taking a couple penalties for the same BS he was pulling and putting his team on the PK two or three times? What do you believe is the better route of changing player behavior?

Furthermore, you can't me that having players like Toews or Keith off the ice for extended amounts of time during a game because of stupid bullshit like this is of equal or MORE value than having them on the ice. You cannot tell me that. Can you? I hope not, because that would contend for one of the worst hockey thoughts of all time.
