JT did what he felt he had to do. Period.

Now, could somebody get a mop, there's estrogen and Oprah magazines all over the floor.

I respect Toews for showing up.

Outside of that, he's lucky Thornton didn't kill him.

Instead of JT lets talk about a dumb penalty last night. Demurs. He clearly punches Sharp square in the face, Sharp doesn't retaliate, Hawks score a huge PP goal, pretty much sealing the deal.

That's a dumb penalty.

Dat's right....and I'm eating crow because the PP looked awesome both when they scored and when they didn't....whole team was firing on all cylinders from the first drop of the puck.

This was a dumb move by Toews. Selfish if you ask me, putting the team on a 4 minute penalty kill. Luckily the Hawks are just good enough this year that we were able to kill it off. It was just poor all around, I was disappointed.

I know Thornton is a pain in the ass, but it was a goon move to go after him like that. Pick your spots, the 4 minute penalty could have lost this game, it didn't, but it's just not something I expect out of JT as a captain to lose composure like that. I'm glad he got out of that unscathed though, but it doesn't make it worth it.

I agree with Trev too, I respect Toews for sticking up for himself after the years of abuse. But I also think it was selfish to put himself ahead of his team in that situation. You can say he lost his cool due to Joe's cheap shots, but I haven't seen a player go ballistic like that in a long time... not even a true goon. Just disappointing to watch.

From the Trib ...

[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]"I felt that it was something I needed to do to stand up for myself," Toews said afterward. "I'm glad I did it. I think it helped our team and we got the win so that's the important thing. If it gives your team energy, that's great. That's the effect … you're really trying to impose on your team."[/background]

[background=rgb(250, 250, 250)]Said Thornton: "(Toews) asked me to fight and I was kind of shocked, but said 'sure.' It wasn't anything serious but he asked me … and I obliged."[/background]

Its a different approach to getting a win, but a win is a win, isn't it?

I'm just glad the refs were blind that they didn't call "Instigator with the visor on." That could have been brutal.

Lol, Thornton really downplaying how psycho JT was. Also, I'm not sure how much energy a team gets unless they actually kill the penalty, which happened to be a double minor... risky. At that point in the game, I don't really think the team needed a boost anyway, they looked pretty good... after admitting he did it for personal gain, he had to tie it into the team somehow I guess.

Hopefully, he doesn't feel like he needs to stand up for himself for a while. Let Bollig, Mayers or some other 4th line plug do it for him from now on.

NO...they can win short stretches without the captain...it's been proven already.

Sorry Ton, but I felt an overwhelming urge to edit your post down to the most salient points. Former occupation(al) hazard. I hope you understand.

Toews has a history of being continually crosschecked in his back and elbowed AND punched in the back of his head by the likes of Thornton, Doan, Backes, etc.

It was nice to see him stand up for himself. It fired up the team after they killed off the PP. Heck, they, got Bolly's 4 on 4 goal during that stretch. Even if the Sharks had scored a goal or two - doubtful with the way the PK is clicking - and won the game, it still brings the team together makes them closer and tighter, when they stick up for themselves and each other, and bodes well for future games.

Yea he should continue to allow players to swipe their elbow at him with out ever doing anything.

I agree.

You play the game, you know how that works.

everyone that has a problem with what he did, you are selfish piles of shit. I suppose Thornton actually connected with the flying elbow Toews was pissed about then the concussion would have been because someone else hadn't taken big Joe out.

So many call this team a bunch of pussies, one of them finally has enough, and he's an idiot. I get it. "Hockey experts".

Sometimes payers have to stick up for themselves or they continue taking the cheap shot. Just like DOAN to Toews in the playoffs last year.

Have some of those clips. You know, where Doan pounds him in the head after he'd come back from concussion?

Silly discussion IMO.

He had enough and addressed it. With a players who ABOVE has cheap shotted him MULTIPLE times in the past.

Oh no, could ruin his season. Sure, so could have the FLYING FUCKING ELBOW he was again pissed off about.

I know.... Go back to the bench... "hey bicks, joe threw another elbow at my head, I'm far to important to the team to deal with it, can you go fight him for me? I know you didn't see it happen, but it did".....

That's not the point. I don't mind him sticking up for himself when the opportunity presents itself, and not take a double minor in the process.

You really think Joe isn't going to throw any more elbows or hack at big bad Johnny because he stuck up for himself right there? Yeah right. He was surprised because he knew how dumb the penalties were that Toews was willing to take.

It's fine though, the way I was taught, you can't tell everyone else to do it if you don't do it yourself... as a captain of the team I think it sends a good message to the team if he decides to drop the gloves every once in a blue moon. Besides, last time he dropped them in a season, the Hawks went on to win the Cup... good karma I guess haha. The only problem I had was the fact that he just didn't give two fucks about putting his team down for 4 minutes, and just wanted a piece of Joe. It was weird... if Carcillo did something like that he would be crucified. Just sayin.

Boy.... you aren't kidding there.

I am with you Ton... you don't go take 2-3 penalties (thank God the instigating with a shield wasn't called) and put your team down like that. Why couldn't he wait til the next faceoff and "ask" him to fight? I know it was spur of the moment but you really shouldn't put your team on the extended PK like that.

Either way... point is moot. Hawks didn't let a PPG in there and they won the game in convincing fashion. Glad Thornton didn't really unload on Toews like he could have otherwise we might be talking another concussion.

Good to see some emotion from the Captain.

He also took Thornton who was not getting a penalty off the ice for 5 minutes as well. For the entire 4 minutes Toews took
