I would highly consider the buyout option more now, if they'll be on the hook for him, even if he retires after being traded to another team scenario.

Being 33... the original idea was to get him to 37 (16/17)...then he'd retire.

I don't see him playing more than 4-5 more years.

Very tough decision.

I agree. We'll see what the new CBA has in store.

Here is some interesting information too:

[background=rgb(245, 245, 245)]James Mirtle@mirtle[/background]

[background=rgb(245, 245, 245)]Keeping salary in trades: Teams can have up to three contracts at one time that they are retaining the salary of.[/background]

James Mirtle@mirtle

[background=rgb(245, 245, 245)]The max teams can keep is 15% of the salary cap. Only 50% of a deal can be kept. A contract can have salary retained in a trade only twice.[/background]

CapGeek@capgeek[background=rgb(245, 245, 245)]

That’s about $9.6M in cap money teams can retain in trades, under a $64.3M upper limit. #NHL[/background]

According to Dave Pagnotta, the Blackhawks can't begin their season on January 19th (at least at home, because the Bulls are playing that night). They could start the season back-to-back, away then home on the 20th.

No worries, I will put an update on the site and try to simplify the new CBA as much as I can. So far there is a lot of speculation so we will see what the final product is by Wednesday (hopefully).

So basically you're going to make it more confusing than it already is.... great.

Never know.

Olesz would be number one. The other three, other than Hossa, just as much chance as Frolik.

Back to buying out.

Here is the problem with buying out Olesz and Frolik.

To buyout those two does not help the Hawks because for this year and next year they are not in cap trouble.

The year that is a problem is; 14/15. The Hawks will have 8 players signed with only 23m to sign 15 to 16 players. Granted some of the youngster may be on the roster at that time, which would approximately bring the roster 12 players signed with 19m to sign 11 to 12 players' an average of 1.58m per player.

Summer of 2014 is when a combination of Hossa & Montador are bought out, then having to sign 9 to 10 players signed an average of 2.7m per player.

Head injuries will never go down until they get rid of the instigator penalty. Take a run at someone, hurt them, they retaliate, you get a PP. No repercussions for being a rat bastard.

Some rules against cement shoulder pads and elbow pads would not hurt either.

Head injuries were probably always "up", they just went undiagnosed or ignored. I mean, they used to play without helmets. Incidental contact alone probably caused quite a few concussions in all those years.

Not only that, a concussion can occur without being hit in the head.

Definitely. That people think that these injuries are on the rise, I don't really believe that. There's just more awareness about today than there was before.

So, for all of the people advocating Hossa's buyout:

Who exactly replaces his 25+ goals and 60-70 points per year?

Of course, if Torres took him out the point is moot, but if he could pull up at least 90% of his 2012 stats it seems to me that unless he's traded away for a warm body that fills a need coming back (I.E. 2nd line Center), I don't see Pirri, Shaw, Saad, Morin, or otherwise coming in and replacing not only the offensive numbers he puts out, but his defensive responsibility; and it's not like Crawford, Keith, and Seabrook can't use all the defensive help they can get.

I don't think anyone really wants to do it, I see it more as a possible necessary evil.

Shaw is going to have 26+ goals 61-71 pts a year. Then in the playoffs Shaw will transform into MegaShaw and make Mike Smith's head explode.

With the way all of the new rules in this CBA are structured I don't see how you don't buy Hossa out after the 2013-2014 season. We can keep him for the next 2 years, then after that he is too much of a risk to cause us a major cap penalty. If he retires early it will be even harder replacing that production with a 3+ million dollar cap penalty. I love Hoss as a player and he is a big part of this team. I am willing to wait until all the dust settles on this and see where we are after the next 2 seasons but you have to strongly consider him for a buyout at that time.

It's more to the fact that previously, if he retired before his contract expired...there wouldn't be a cap hit.

But now (maybe)...if he reitred with years left on his contract...the Hawks would be on the hook for his cap hit.

Its not that anyone doesn't know his value to the team - but a 5mil cap hit for a guy that may not be on the roster the last 3-4 years of his contract, may not be a good idea.
