He is a downgrade in the field, but you said there is no current evidence to suggest he was better. And yet in the season with his lowest production ever he is still outproducing any of the options you listed at the plate. He has more homeruns combined than those two and he gets on base at a higher rate. That seems like some evidence that he might be better.

All right, but the question is how much worse to make up for the difference in bat. And clearly there is some evidence to suggest Youk would be better. Now I agree it is possible the cost would be higher than it is worth for the Sox. You only make that move if it is cheap for you, but the odds are pretty strong in your favor that Youk will be a massive offensive upgrade over any internal options.
