Er Kyle.... Adam Beach (who also happens to be Canadian ... and might be a better prospect than Kyle Beach) -played Ira Hayes in Flags of our Fathers....

Edited: Apparently this new development means that I am now going to be prone to confusing Blackhawks' prospects with actors in Iwo Jima themed movies... oh well, better to be aware of it now -as opposed to down the track ..... like when the Marines raised the flag in the neutral zone...

Beach has a good chance of making the team come September.

He probably has a chance, as anybody does, but a good chance? No way in hell. I'd say his chances are pretty slim.

He hasn't proved even at the AHL level that he is an asset to a team. From what I have seen, he still hasn't improved his foot speed enough to be effective. I have also read that the dumb penalties continue.

Just looking at the current roster and prospects, I don't see him having that great of a chance at all.

How does a hockey player improve their speed? I don't honestly know.

I think it is possible in hockey more than other sports due to the fact they on skates. Someone more in the know than myself could probably explain better than I can, but I do think it is possible by being a better skater and improving leg strength.

Two things in my opinion...

Muscle and quickness. Different drills for both. Wall sits, squats, lunges, etc for muscle Then you have box drills, ladder drills, parachute drills for quickness.

Makes sense to me.

And honestly, how many open spots will there be for AHLer's?

Wouldn't Saad be more likely to make the team than Beach?

I think others would be better equiped those questions because my knowledge of how contracts and transaction rules work between the NHL and the various developmental leagues is still developing. I know baseball far better.

The Hawks have called up plenty of wingers in the last year or two, while Beach was in the AHL: Smith, Shaw, Hayes, Saad.

Two of those guys weren't even drafted until 2011 and made the jump to the NHL over Beach. If that doesn't indicate that the Hawks aren't so high on Beach's prospects as a pro, I don't know what else does.

Kane is going to have a big year and everyone will forget about this Cinco De Mayo incident. I'm talking like 90+ points big year.

There would be nothing better.

No better way to shut up the critics and no better thing for Kane's own career than to have him **** up the league this year.

Exactly. I feel like he realizes that was his last straw with the team. He gets one more chance and can't blow it. He will focus on gettin stronger this off season and dominate.

Another way can be through technique; there was sort of a fad thing going around in the 80's called 'power skating' - and I think essentially what it was -involved having full strides, and at the end of the stride sort of a last thrust off to the side with the toe of your skate.

Not that it does a guy nearing 50 any good any longer mind you (talking about me...) ... but fwiw - once I got taught that one, it was like finding 11 on an amp.

Edited to add:

Kane... again?!
- Yes well, he's been promising that for the past couple of years, and realistically he needs to put up or shut up at this point.

Still very big, atleast in the Chicago area and I would imagine everywhere else.

Every travel program usually has a night (Monday night seem like the popular choice) for power skating. Once a week to get the kids away from shooting, puck work, goofing around. I always kinda dreaded power skating (what kid wants to go on a ice with very little puck time?) but it definitely was a big factor in my early years of skating.

Definitely a great way for youngsters to focus on their skating and improve their foot speed.

That gives you an idea about how long I have been away from skating around Chicago ... or just around skating (I don't remember anyone on the team I played with outside of Sydney doing it or even talking about it -- but then again playing a position was a mystery to a lot of them. (Picture everyone chasing the puck all over the ice... guys trying to carry the puck end to end without passing ... those 1 on 5 breakaways ... they worked well for those guys... :rolling: )

Nevermind any of that...
