Sounds like Jake Cronenworth is going to be part of the deal just based on them grabbing Kim from korea to play at 2B. He's an interesting piece though I'm hoping he's more a third piece. I'm not sure what that means for Nico though. I'm guessing he moves to CF.

3:04pm: The two teams are nearing agreement “on the multiple pieces” of a Darvish trade, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The Pads “have accepted the haul they will have to send to the Cubs,” Acee writes.

2:50pm:
Top catching prospect Luis Campusano is among the names that has been discussed, Nightengale reports. His inclusion in the deal would give the Cubs a replacement should they send a catcher to the Padres. Campusano would join Miguel Amaya as a potential long-term option at the position with Contreras up for free agency in two years (if he’s not traded in this or another deal first).

I don't hate Campusano as a prospect but the cubs have been in love with catching prospects lately. They have an absurd amount of depth at every level.

If we don't get Gore in return, I'll be disappointed. This team needs young pitching.

Not really. They have a lot of young pitching. If you want to argue they don't have elite of elite caliber pitching prospects then sure but most people don't. Also I wouldn't hold your breath on getting Gore. Sounds likely they are gonna end up with the best high school hitter in last year's draft, a hendricks like starter in davies one other prospect and potentially the 2B I mentioned who would be a quality lead off hitter

4:32pm: The trade looks to be close, Heyman tweets. Caratini would “likely” join Darvish in San Diego, though the Cubs want “some MLB experience” as part of their return.

CJ Abrams
Zack Davies
unknown
Jake Cronenworth

It is not bad. Cronenworth was #2 in the ROY. Abrams has 80 ranked speed. That is game changing. Davies is meh. The other prospect better be something of quality.

I mean if you don't have the cards to win in 2021 why not sell? It's looking likely the cubs come away with Davies and Hassell for sure. Davies is pretty meh but he fills in for darvish cheaply and is an easy trade piece assuming they sell in july and he pitches decently. Hassell is a pretty interesting piece. He was the #8 pick in the previous draft and was the best pure prep hitter in that draft. He'd essentially be adding another Howard level prospect if not better. If the power comes through he could be a star.

There's some conflicting reports on what else you are looking at. I've seen some reports saying 2 other players and another saying 3. It looks likely Campusano is another piece and he looks like he could be a big get as well.

Zach Davies: Looks like a payroll dump to me. He might get 7M in arb.
2021 Status3rd-Year Arb Eligible, Earliest Arb Eligible: 2019, Earliest Free Agent: 2022

I would be ok with this if they get Ryan Weathers: unranked on the top 100. LHP ETA 2022. Fastball 60. Change up 55 Slider 55 control 60. So this guy makes a solid 2nd lefty behind Marquez.

That makes this deal nice. Davies just does a push on the rotation. Weathers makes that deal worth it.

Can we refuse Davies? Dude sucks.

Ya he is ok as a 5 on a non contending team. Which the Cubs become after this trade goes through.

Like I said. If they get Weathers you are looking at Hendricks, Marquez, Alzolay, Weathers and a battle for the 5. That is a decent rotation going forward with. Davies is just a plug for 2021. Which is a suck year regardless.

I would target Gore myself. Take back Meyers to offset pay then send over Amaya. Cubs are blocked for him and the Padres have a few question marks at Catcher.

CJ was interesting but I would hold off on adding another MI.

Listening to the podcast by Boras kept going to Yelch as a comp. for Bryant. He never says things with out reason. That must be the target payday that he will accept. That in mind years/$215M (2020-28), plus 2029 option. That might be doable (front load and make the back end cheap) and they instead look to cut Javy and target Lindor for SS.
The Cubs should be shot if they get rid of Amaya.
