EXACTLY!!! I'm so tired of hearing/seeing people argue that there's no way the Hawks can give Seabs a raise next year unless they move somebody. Without moving a single player, the Hawks are gaining $4MM in cap room simply because the Toews/Kane bonuses won't be there next season. That should give them plenty of room to give Seabs a raise, and to re-sign Brouwer if they're so inclined. Gah!

Yes, and they need to resign Seabs and Brouwer, a goalie, upgrade 5th/6th D-men, and figure out 3rd and 4th lines (keeping Stahlberg and others on expiring contracts can cost more $$$). Also, won't the kids on the Hogs eat up a lot of cap space if they earn a roster spot next year?

Hey, if it all works out and you can keep Campbell, that'll be great. I'm not a BC hater.

And the Hawks weren't even going to be able to field a team this year.

No way they were going to be able to resign Toews, Kane AND Keith.

The Cap may go down too...if the league loses money.

OH NO!!

Not to mention a new TV contract should be in place. This alone could easily entice the league to up the cap limit another 5% or if revenues top 2.1 billion, like they did last season, the 5% raise would be automatic. If there is a 5% increase, the upper limit would rise by 2.6M for a total of 62.4M. It sure would be welcome in Chicago.

Comparing Seabs and Keith, Seabs is what, 3.5 mil per now, and assuming we sign him in similar length to Keith (or until he's 35), I don't see him much more than 4.5-5M per. That's at most 1.5M off of that 4 mil.

Unless Brouwer seriously breaks out, he won't get that big of a raise. So far the slow start for him hasn't helped his chances. Even assuming he makes .5M more...we still have that extra $2M to play with

Eklund is planting seeds again for possible Campbell suitor yesterday...

"On the Habs...

It really is unimaginable that Andrei Markov is once again going to miss a huge amount of playing time to an injury...you have to feel bad for the guy. A case can be made that Markov, along with Price, are the most important players to the Montreal Canadiens...And now the Habs are in the spot I talked about last week when dealing O'Byrne.

However Habs fans...I wouldn't panic. I was told when O'Byrne was dealt there was another D-man the Habs were close to picking up. I really believe that player is likely Kevin Bieksa, but the Canucks now will be able to demand a bit more in return knowing the Canadiens are in a spot.

And if they do, expect the negotiations to stall and the Habs to take their chances for a bit. Gauthier is not a GM who you can hold up easily....yet at some point a deal will need to be struck. I have even heard Brian Campbell's name mentioned today. There will be quite a few names coming up in the next few days here..."

I was just about to post about Markov.

If the hawks are looking to get rid of BC's contract it seems like this would be a viable time to do it, though it would mean sacrificing this year for a full out retooling (unless the kids step it up). The Canadiens sure would not be providing any veteran/capable D-man coming back, so it would be up to the kids in the system to step up. I got hopes for Leddy, but I think he still needs some time down below. It's a tough call, I guess it would depend on what's coming back.

As for the other possibility for one of my teams dealing with the Canadiens, I'd LOVE to see them take Bieksa off the Canucks' hands. I wonder if they'd be willing to sacrifice Tinordi?

Keep dreaming about Hawks retooling this year, they will again crush the Nucks dreams.

Apparently Chicago has signed D Garner Exelby and placed him on waivers, assigning him to Rockford.

Hmm. I thought the Hawks already owned his rights and that they were waiving him in hopes that he would clear, and they would bring him up to play for the Hawks -- meaning the end of one of Boynton, Cullimore, Hendry, or Scott (preferably Boynton). I dunno.

Edit: Nevermind, just saw a ton of tweets from Adam Jahns explaining the situation. Hawks owned his rights but had to waive him to sign him to an NHL contract, so he may end up in Rockford or in Chicago, but most likely Rockford for the time being.
