Like I said earlier, not the homerun pick I was hoping for, but seems like a nice arm to add to the system. Guys with the true top of the rotation potential were off the board by the time the Cubs got to pick, and it seems like a nice arm that the Cubs need to be adding.

6'2". Has three potential plus pitches. Has a strong commitment to a school. Best pitch is a 90-94 fastball.

After a big performance at last summer's Area Code Games, Blackburn has continued pitching well this spring to keep him firmly on the prospect map. The NoCal high schooler has a good fastball that hits 92 mph consistently and will touch a tick or two higher on the radar gun at times. His two secondary offerings – a curve and a changeup – both have the chance to be very effective pitches. He's generally around the strike zone and thanks to his athleticism and sound delivery, his command should only improve with experience. The Arizona State recruit has some projectability, meaning his already pretty good stuff has room to get even better. That should get him off the board early enough to keep him from heading to Arizona.

Once tomorrow's picks are known through round 10 we'll have a better idea of how the Cubs may intend to allocate the money. The three picks tonight are all on top 100 lists so it's not like they drafted Hayden fucking Simpson.

:notfunny: god your an idiot.

I always wondered why the MLB draft pales in comparison to the NBA and NFL drafts, I never watch this, I never even know that it's on.

Mostly because unless you do your homework, most casual fans have no idea who most of these kids are. On the other hand, NBA and NFL draftees get tons of exposure through NCAA play unless they're elite high school prospects, although that no longer applies due to the age restrictions.

That and the expectation is that a first round pick in the NBA and NFL is going to be a starter and or impact player from day 1. Whereas the first overall pick in the major league draft can be three or more years away, if they ever make it.

After day one it's what most of us thought would happen.. Position player with 1st and pitchers on the comps..

I wouldn't doubt we see more pitchers in a majority.

According to a reporter in Springfield, MO the Cubs called Johnson "about two picks before" to let him know they were going with him? Lance McCullers was picked two picks before the Cubs took Johnson

I believe signability issues were rumored with Blackburn, but his twitter convo with Shawon Dunston, Jr. suggests that he is eager to start his pro career.

That was strongly hinted on the MLB Network broadcast. I think the Cubs think they can get Almora either right at slot or a little below which could give them flexiblity in signing guys like Blackburn.
