I think the money is way to much for him but I trust emery and Trestman are making the right move. I will also expect Jay to have top 5 stats in almost every category and the playoffs every year of this contract.

I would think a restructure comes into play after year 5 if we assume a structure like the one I posted. The fact is 17 and 18 million for a franchise QB is really not that much if he is performing like he should.

The bolded part is the kicker...if he can play to the level of his contract then I don't think anyone will mind this contract a few years from now. But if he is inconsistent and turnover prone, similar to how he was early in his career in Chicago then we overpaid. As long as it is structured where the Bears won't be killed on the cap hit then I can be ok with this move.

Vash still has not learned that the world (or board in this case) does not in fact revolve around him.

But the problem with this argument is....

in hindsight, those contracts are grossly inflated and may be proven to be mistakes...

So that says anything about this contract being like that?

I think you should expect Cutler to act like Cutler and not expect him to be elite just because some money got thrown his way.
He is not elite but he is franchise and got paid what the market is for franchise qbs. I don't see him transforming into Tom Brady but I don't see him regressing like Stafford did this year either - not under Trestman. If they fix what they need to and we stay healthy and the stars align we can win a championship with Cutler. The days of winning one with Trent Dilfer are long gone. By the way, for those who hate this deal: how many superbowls has Brady won in the last five years?

Don't disagree... just showing the going rate at the position... Jay is 7th... in a couple years this will be tenth or worse once Philly, San Fran and Seattle take care of theirs. Any less than the 50 Mil then Jay would go elsewhere... and I guess the Bears felt this was the best option this year given Free Agency will be Vick... and they have the 14th pick... May turn out to be a very poor deal but time will tell... The coach had them 2nd in the NFL in scoring this year in his first year... behind Denver... I'll trust him with the offense... at least now they can focus on the 25 unsigned guys... and the defense I hope...

I don't love this deal... but it is what it is...

You look at FA to much. This isn't the NBA where FA will win you championships. In the NFL you need to draft good. That's where it's at.

Ideally, you look at both free agency and the draft, and depend on neither. We have alot of key players at or approaching their 30's, and if you expect to win a superbowl before guys like Marshall, Forte, Briggs, Jennings, and Cutler decline due to age then improvement will have to happen in the next couple of years. You can't expect a defense full of draft picks alone to be ready by then.

It's part of the narrative of stupid people. The fact that I was born a US citizen and have been an American for longer than him doesn't matter; I went to school in Scotland therefore I'm a pompous European haha.

What's great is that he's just highlighting his own intellectual insecurity even more.

First sign of a sore loser is blaming the refs on a loss when the teams defense handed the opponents the win
And the first sign of a general loser is when they have to comment on someones post just to get noticed when it was between two other people
