So Cutler is counting 22.5 million against the cap this season?

As there is no signing bonus that would mean the base salaries are going to be the cap numbers?

That will impact our free agent ability.

We'd be able to backload the deals of other free agents no? Or raise the year 2 salaries(which dip for Cutler in year 2).

This sure seems like a lot of money for a player that was physically able to complete only 9 out of 16 games this year and 9 out of 16 games two years prior. Has anybody ever been awarded a contract anything like this who missed this much time? Did the Colts offer P. Manning a new contract or pick up Denver's when he went to the Colts?
The Bears set the contract up to protect themselves against the injury concerns. Here's part of the article below:

In each of those four seasons, Cutler earns $156,250 for each game he appears on the active roster, for a maximum additional earnings of $2.5 million per year and $10 million over four.

Thus, he’ll get the full $126.7 million only if he’s on the active roster for every game from 2017 through 2020.

First 3 years are guaranteed so they aren't protected from anything. After 2016, they are protected against injury somewhat and could let him go any time without taking a cap hit.

I am fine with it , but the article was not very clear.

Might as well eat it while we can.

But I think this takes us out of the Greg Hardy and Jarius Byrd free agent pool and puts us in the Michael Bennett realm.

I would also think that this could lead us to a trade down.

It is jut weird that Emery would say that the 17 million tag was a lot to carry and then have a 22 million dollar cap hit. But I guess that is the price of flexibility.

It's not a friendly contract for Emery or Trest considering their jobs will cease to exist the moment the Jay experiment is labeled a failure.

I would say that's fair for both sides.

That's the way I read it too.

Not so much the Bears as Emery and Trestman. The Bears will be just fine... well generally speaking.

How is that fair for both sides? He was able to play a full 9 out of 16 games in 2 out of his last 3 seasons and we have no protection if he does that again in the next 3 seasons?

Not too mention this contract was given to a guy that threw 12 picks to 19 TDs in the games he actually managed to play... plus multiple fumbles.

And then there were the almost picks.

Bears could be paying 22 mil to him next year for sitting on IR the whole season.
True, but Cutler could be without a NFL contract in only three years.

I'm sure another team would have offered him more long-term security with less strings attached.
