trouble is the cubs should be the most desperate to do something. The status quo is not a good idea at this point, so whether they want to retool or slightly rebuild, they still needed to do something. But they overpaid most guys so dramatically that they can’t move them without taking a huge loss

Acting out of desperation is never a good way to conduct business. Go smoke a bowl and relax, the cubs will be just fine this offseason. Even if they sit on their hands and do nothing...they are still a good enough team to compete for the division. Who have they overpaid? They overpaid for heyward...that’s really about it

Kimbrel is making 16 million this year my dude.

He’d get half that at best on the market right now. Probably less.

Provide me with data to show he wouldn’t get 16 million on the open market. Otherwise, you’re doing nothing more than speculating. When on top of his game, kimbrel is a top 5 closer in baseball...those type of closers get that kind of $$

For example....Kenley Jansen got a 5 year 80 mil contract...which averages out to be...you guessed it, 16 mil per year. At least the cubs were wise to keep it a shorter deal

How many times could the situation occur in a season where Rizzo would be on 3rd and Javy on 2nd and there be such a wild pitch that Javy could stand the chance of scoring from 2nd but Rizzo would also not be running as well? Would it happen even once?
There would be wild pitches where Javy would no doubt get to third if Rizzo was not standing there and afraid to score. Switch those two around and Javy scores and Rizzo stays standing at second.. There are singles that might get Javy to third if Rizzo does not go second to third and not score. I really dont know what team some of you are watching.

How many one run games did we lose last year???????????????? How many games were we out of the playoffs by?

People make it seem like Javy would not have gotten at least 10-20 extra bases due to his all out fearlessness.

I dont care where Rizzo hits, 4th 5th, they clearly need to score more runs when they are not gotten by the long ball.

Cards are trading for Matthew Liberatore who's a pretty well regarded pitching prospect for the rays. No word on exact return the rays are getting yet but speculation is it's Jose Martinez plus maybe more.

theo hit on every prospect for a few years there, but Cards are so much better run overall, sad to say.

I don’t think they’d overpay for Arenado since I don’t think he’s an elite hitter away from Coors and they probably understand that.

I've also seen speculation that part of the reason for doing this was to clear up outfield spots for them to make a run at bringing Ozuna back.

On the flip side...the rays just got a hell of a DH

For reference, the two pieces being traded probably are the teams swapping competitive balance picks. St. Louis has the 38th pick and Tampa has the 70th. Last year the 38th pick had a $1.95 mil bonus attached where as the 70th pick had a $906.8k. So, Tampa appears to also be picking up about a mil in draft budget in this deal. Liberatore himself signed for $3.5 mil. So, they are getting about a third of that back for sure plus whatever players they get.

1)That is not what you described that I called into question.
2) The other best option suggested would be Schwarber who was only just above Rizzo in the taking the extra base metric.

So if that's what worries you, then you'd want Heyward in front of Javy followed by Bryant, Bote, Happ, Contreras, Schwarber, and then Rizzo.

But I seem to remember the one of the biggest problems for the Cubs last year was the number of outs they made trying to take extra bases. I could be wrong on that.

Rather like that deal for the Rays. Arozarena has hit like crazy. In the minors he hit .292/.377.477. Martinez has been a really good hitter as well but is more a DH. And they are getting about a mil in additional draft budget which is roughly equivalent to a late 2nd round pick for Liberatore. You could argue Liberatore is the best player in the deal but young pitching is always a risk and the Rays got a bunch of team control out of it.

It’s not about his base running(he isn’t good, but I’ve certainly seen worse), it’s about his OBA and the fact that javy and Schwarber are guys that drive runs in and in javys case has a low OBA. It just makes sense to have your high OBA guys hit in front of your RBI guys. Rizzo does both, so he is flexible...but on a roster of guys with mediocre OBA’s it makes him a candidate
Javy and Schwarber drive in runs when the runner is not Rizzo.

Rizzo leading off scores only on solo hrs

They’re going to flip that pitcher to Colorado for Arenado

But what do the numbers say about Rizzo and leading off? Last season Rizzo scored a run on 17.3% of his PA while leading off. It was a very small sample size. Take his 3 year split and it was 13.3%, which is in line with his 13.2% Run Scored per PA those 3 seasons. So now take the top 5 run scorers from lead off last year. While they all had a higher percentage number than Rizzo's 3 year average, only one was higher than is number last season. They ranged from 19.3% down to 14.9%. So is the difference really that much?

With the ascension of the Reds, and the Cubs inability to beat them even when they are down.....the Cubs are staring 4th place in the face. I get they are waiting on the Bryant grievance decision....but if we have to watch that SAME TEAM that lost 9 in a row with season on the line...and finished just 6 above .500...it is going to be absolutely brutal this year.

But...you never know in baseball....and we still don't know what's gonna happen after Bryant grievance is determined.
