Curious because I have not watched any of his tape, what's your analysis?
He's a combo forward. Will be more of a secondary or tertiary ballhandler/playmaker in the NBA. He has a good basketball IQ, moves well off the ball, solid shooting mechanics, good defender. I'd say he's closer on the + end of athletes rather than average, but won't be taking too many people off guard with his footspeed in the NBA. He's an adequate ballhandler although not very skilled in terms of the number of moves he has to use, his moves are basically limited to a step back, and straight line drives to the lane. He's a streaky shooter at best, and a plain awful shooter at worst. His FT% numbers don't excite me at the possibility of his jumper improving. Good FT shooters aren't always solid shooters, but there's even less historical evidence for bad FT shooters becoming solid shooters. He actually has some straight line speed, laterally not so much.
I think he'll do well in the full court where he can run, playmake, maybe even catch some alley oops himself, but you make the money in the half court, and I think he has a ways to go with his skills there.
This dude went into some details of my issues. How Good is Deni Avdija?
Basically it comes down to do I think he will become a good enough shooter and ballhandler to open up the rest of his game and justify #4 overall, and it's a fat NO for me. At #7-15ish all day, where we can resolve to being happy to get a good role player, but at #4 overall, I can't with a straight face say this is the best option.
