Bowman on Oduya: "He played a big part of the turnaround on our team. His style of hockey complimented our style."

We have an entire summer before the puck drops, but not so long we can't proclaim the sky is falling.

I like Oduya. I like the move. His playoff performance wasn't spectacular but he is a massive improvement over what we had at the trade deadline and he took a paycut to stay a Blackhawk.

We now have excellent depth on defense without signing some washed up aging vet or knuckle dragging pylon.

Last I checked the available UFA centers I wasn't terribly impressed. Stan will have to trade for a #2 center anyway if that is his plan. He has plenty of player/prospect depth to do that. I expect he will stand pat regardless.

Regarding D-men I doubt the 6 million cap space they had would've been enough to land Suter either.

If they plan on bringing in a star/highly sought after player it will be via trade IMO. We'll see what happens at the draft and during free agency. I'm disappointed with the results this last season, but still think we are legitimate contenders (when healthy).

Bowman: "We're still looking to make additional changes to our team. We're not even in July yet, [Oduya's extension] doesn't mean we're not looking to improve the team."

So he's trading Oduya, Hammer, Brunette, fill in the blanks, for a lollipop?

My favorite teams
 1. Portland Timbers
 1. Chicago Blackhawks
Damn, that's steep.

If Stan is content with the D as it is now, he better trade Crawford for 30 cinderblocks, some re-bar, and some quick-set concrete.

Stupid move, maybe if Oduya didn't play like the NHL was a no contact league....guy is soft and that is too much money to be paying him. All I have to say is look at the Devils and Kings defenses, they don't even come close to beating us in talent, but have us in all the things that are so important in the playoffs.

I mean the Devils #1 guy is Zidlicky, how many seasons did we spend watching that guy on Nashville and Minnesota just wallowing away as a decent offensive defenseman? He's a -45 for his career, but this year he got into a defensive system built around the team and look where he is now. Both these teams, COME PLAYOFF TIME, have had great team defense, solid stay at home D-men, great centers, physical......reminds me way to much of the team we had here two years ago. We are SOOOOO far away from our cup team today it pisses me off to think about.

THEY SIGNED HIM FOR HOW MUCH?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Please tell me that 3 point whatever million is a joke. Guy looked terrified during the first round in the face of the Coyotes forecheck. Oduya is a nice player in the 2-3 million dollar range, anything more than that he's just a waste of money. The optimist in me says that Stan is doing this as a way to give himself the ability to trade Hjalmarsson or Montador for a forward to a team that strikes out on July 1st when it comes to signing D-men. However the realist in me sees Stan using the same lineup that looked like shit from February through the end of the year. God I hope we don't see Kruger or one of those other bums at second line Center.

Dude were not getting a 2nd line center. Our only hope is to have McNeil or Hayes magically come up quick and be THAT good. I mean they did it with Kruger, but there is little hope of them finally realizing the kid just doesn't fit in with the likes of Sharp and Hossa.

The incompetent responses of "Kane played his best hockey when playing center" really prove to me that we aren't getting anything of the sort. Very sad cause if we hope to win a cup with the likes of this talent surrounding our core, we desperately need a rock solid 2nd line center. These soft role players on our team who can sniff 20 goals has been and will continue to have us exiting early until it changes.

Oduya isn't the answer. Either Montador is not coming back (retiring due to injury?) or him and Hammer might get traded.

This isn't the type of defenseman the Hawks need. That 3 million could of been spent on a guy like Stuart, Sarich, Jackman. Guys that will make the opposition think twice before they take the puck inside the "house". Now we have another soft puck moving dman. Next to Keith and Leddy we just added another guy who won't play physical hockey.

The only thing I can think of is Stan laughing and saying "I don't know what the **** I'm doing"

Is he really icing the same team that got beat out in the first round last year?

But with a healthy Toews we might get out of the first round.

I think Olsen could be that guy.

Olsen has the ability and has shown in the past to be a physical Dman, but adding another one and subtracting Hammer or Montador would make a huge upgrade over Lepisto and O'Donnell.

Total fucking idiocy. For one, they overpaid him. Oduya wasn't getting more than 3 on the open market. That's assuming ANYONE wanted his soft, turnover centric ass. Second, he brings NOTHING the Hawks need. He's soft, soft, soft. Third, he looked to get WORSE come playoff time. Holy ****....

I am officially on the fire Stan Bowman bandwagon. Lil' Lispy is a fucking MORON. $3.4M for fucking Oduya? This is Bowman trying to justify the draft picks he traded away to get him. Nothing else. The front office is completely hopeless. Buy hey, at least they talked to Kane about his Madison trip and were "disappointed" in him.

Massive pay cut.... Stan really is a fucking idiot.

I'd also like to know why they had to do this now? They could have waited AT LEAST a few weeks to see what teams put out there for trades before trying to sign him. They signed him having NO IDEA what the market would dictact his contract to look like. I'm sorry, but this is just inexcusable.

Our defensive pipe line is scarce. Oduya is another band-aid that will be here for 3 years.

Now, if he's on our 3rd pairing because we brought in a better dman, I wouldn't mind it.

I'm trying to figure what was accomplished.

Campbell's contract only killed the Hawks in the summer of 2010 and Stan managed to get past that and still screwed it all up.

paid way too much and one year too long.

I like Oduya..hated him in the playoffs though.

I don't really understand how the 3 years and the $$ can be justified. But it's Stan..nothing he does comes without ??????????

It makes zero sense. Zero. I don't understand this AT ALL. The only reason it would make any sense is if the Hawks know something we don't, and Montador is completely done. If he's done, they STILL paid way too fucking much for Oduya, who should be NO HIGHER than the #5 on this team. Paying a #5 $3.4M for three years? Wow. I'm still unable to make any sense of this.

Someone hasn't seen us play hockey apparently and he's behind the desk... -.- Really, Stan? REALLY???? $3.4M for a guy who pretty much effed up his play during the playoffs? REALLY!?!?

Not that I think he hit his way out of town or anything, I just don't think he deserves $3.4M a year for his performance.

Can't be the Boards without a graphic.

Nicely well done. This just makes me miss Campbell even more.

In the Eastern Conference, he'd be worth what he's being paid next year.... He's an Eastern Conference-style defenseman. For me to say that means a lot.

Makes me wonder what the hell Scotty sees in him, cause we all didn't see it come playoff time... If Stan wanted him, then wow we must be more screwed then I ever imagined.

Either way, I'd pay him no more than $2.5M which is very reasonable. He has the potential to make a decent 4-man, but we didn't see him much in the playoffs. $3.4M is a bit steep in my eyes.

Is the market that desperate not to want to be in Chicago that we have to overpay people just to stay here now? Its almost like the Campbell signing all over again...
