The back-end of the rotation was marred by injuries until now, and Cashner is all but done for the year.
Signing Fielder would be OK, he's better than Pena, but he and Wilson won't win the Cubs 20 games alone.
Why pay Kubel? I'd rather pay Byrd.
Replacing Coleman/Davis/Lopez with Wilson would probably win us 20 games.

We are inconsistent... we can never build a long-term winner. BUT it seems that we have finally added some consistency, becoming a long-term loser.
how is six winning seasons out of ten becoming a "long-term loser"?
Sure it's been a rough two seasons but that doesn't mean this team is fucked for the long term. I'll be shocked if the 2012 Cubs don't win more than the 2011 ones.
How?
Are we really gonna count on a bunch of young players? Or are we gonna be able to spend and get a bunch?
Idk.. We're really on the fence if you ask me.
Because this team is simply not "this" bad. It's not a good team but it's not third worst in baseball bad either.
Even standing pat I think it's a 70 win team next year.
The starting pitching simply isnt this bad and thats really the only BAD part of this team. No parts of the tram are particularly good but the starting pitching is what's been bad and it won't be this bad again. It just can't be.

Kubel isn't any better than Byrd, in fact I'd argue that Byrd is better than Kubel.Replacing Coleman/Davis/Lopez with Wilson would probably win us 20 games.
Yes, I meant trade Byrd. He is just not that good.

Byrd isn't a star player on a great team, but he fits the bill as a solid 5 tool player on a great team.
I'm sorry Byrd is a nice player but you don't use the term 5 tool to describe him. The only tool that he does at an above average rate is hit for average, maybe since his .310 average is a career high right now. He has hit more than 12 homeruns in a season exactly one time. He has never stolen more than a 11 bases in a season. His defense is average in terms of range and arm. Byrd is a nice player, but lets not oversell him here.
I don't know where to check ISO, but what is his? ISO or Slugging are things I'd rather use than HR.
He has never posted a SLG higher than .479 and his career SLG is .424. Byrd isn't devoid of power, but to say he is above average for power is silly.
c'mon co you are better than this.
You know damn well that doesn't net us 20 wins.
Even vintage Pedro doesn't net us 20 wins. Five to seven wins is much more realistic.
70 win = 90 loss.
I guess I'm not that optimistic on the pitching..
We keep Garza, Z, Demp.. that's not terrible but not even close to optimal.
We don't know what were gonna get out of Cash..
Wells is never consistent.
No way in hell we should be pulling random old guys off the scrapheap like we have.
Gonna have to go sign at least on SP then let Wells and Cash fight it out Farnsworth v Paul Wilson style for the 5th spot.
Bullpen.. idk the back end is nice as long as they are used more than once or twice a month.
