It will be great to see how Makarov fairs in the exhibition games and the rest of the guys for that matter.

It's preseason.
This.

Also? On the plus side and scrimmage losses aside at least Turco showed up to camp with a lid and pads to match his new team unlike a certain Finnish former Cup-winning CHI goalie who shall remain nameless but played for their new team yesterday in a thoroughly unholy mix of Hawks and SJ gear.

Not sure but maybe they announced it at practice today like they did yesterday for Scotty Bowman's birthday but I just read in an article that Sun. was Makarov's 23rd birthday! Makes those 3 points he scored across the BLACK team's two Sun. scrimmages all the sweeter for himself I'd imagine. Good on him for having a great camp so far and hot on the heels of a great rookie tournament performance to boot.

Some nice quotes from Igor courtesy of the Tribune's Chris Kuc's camp notes. . .

Settling in: Winger Igor Makarov continues to impress in the early stages of camp. Sunday he scored his third goal in as many scrimmages.

"I'm just shooting on net," said Makarov, who turned 23 on Sunday. "I feel comfortable. I've stayed (in the United States) one month and I'm learning English and I feel good here."

Makarov was the Hawks' second-round selection (33rd overall) in the 2006 draft and has played in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League the last two seasons.

"This is good experience for me," Makarov said. "I want to stay here. If I go down to Rockford I'm not worried. I'll work hard and maybe get called up."

With several forward positions still in flux, Makarov is in the mix to make the roster.

"You notice him," Quenneville said. "He's (got) speed, he wants the puck, he seems to go to the net real strong and real hard and there's some production behind that game as well. He'll be a guy we'll give a good shot to see how he can handle it."

Very interesting comments from Makarov about wanting to be here and going to Rockford if that happens. I'm pretty sure the Hawks actually gave him an out clause to play in Russia if he doesn't make the big team, but it looks like he's not going to excercise that option. Good for him. Staying here in the US, learning English, and playing NA hockey can only help him. He probably hated getting buried on those KHL teams behind veteran players that he skated circles around.

More Igor love folks---this time courtesy of the Sun-Times camp notes by Adam Jahns (also a tidbit about Kane wanting some PK action!). . .

HAWKS IN BRIEF: Eager Igor impressing Toews, Q with skill level Comments

September 20, 2010

BY ADAM L. JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com

No young player has been more impressive in training camp than left wing Igor Makarov. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has even taken notice.

''His skill level is there,'' Toews said. ''He can bury the puck. He's got a handful of goals in the last couple of days. ... He's a fun player to watch.''

Makarov, who celebrated his 23rd birthday Sunday, leads all players with six points (three goals, three assists) in the scrimmages.

''I feel comfortable,'' said Makarov, the 33rd overall pick in 2006 who just came to Chicago a month ago. ''It's just two days. I want to play here. It's my life. ... If Toews says I have good skills, it's good. Toews is a good player. It's awesome.''

Makarov might be behind other more experienced forwards such as Jack Skille, Jake Dowell and Ryan Potulny in the pecking order. But it will be hard for the Hawks not to keep Makarov in Chicago if he continues to stand out. He beat goalie Marty Turco on a nice wrist shot from the slot Sunday.

''You notice him,'' Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. ''His speed, he wants the puck. He seems to go to the net real strong and real hard. ... He'll be a guy that we'll give a good shot to here, see how he can handle it.''

Makarov also had an impressive showing, representing the Hawks in the Toronto Maple Leafs' rookie tournament in London, Ontario, earlier this month.

''You're always objective,'' Quenneville said. ''You go into every camp knowing there's always some surprises. Some guys always progress faster than you envision. ... Sometimes the tough decisions are the best ones, organizationally, you have to make.''

Observations from Day 2 in Sassone's blog which include some further information about how some non-Makarov players fared on Sunday. . .

Makarov impresses for second day

Posted by TimS on Sun, 09/19/2010 - 15:16

Rookie left winger Igor Makarov had another goal and 2 assists in two scrimmages on Sunday and is the leading scorer after two days of training camp with 3 goals and 3 assists.

Kyle Beach also scored twice in his one scrimmage game, but it’s Makarov who is turning heads.

However, the true test for Makarov and Beach will be the eight-game preseason, which gets under way on Wednesday against Tampa Bay in Winnipeg.

“He wants the puck, he seems to go to the net real strong and real hard, and there’s some production behind that game as well,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said of Makarov following Sunday’s sessions. “He’s a guy that we’ll give a good shot here to see how he can handle it. We’ll get a good assessment as we go along.”

Makarov certainly has the kind of speed and skill the Hawks want. While the plan might have been to start the 23-year-old Russian in Rockford, a good exhibition season could change his course.

“You’re always objective,” Quenneville said. “I think you go into every game knowing there’s always some surprises. Guys sometimes progress a little faster than you envision and it’s a healthy thing.”

Goalie Corey Crawford also had a strong second day and looks ready to embrace the role of being Marty Turco’s backup. Crawford has allowed only 2 goals in 75 minutes in his first two scrimmages.

Left wing Bryan Bickell also had 2 goals in one scrimmage on Sunday, giving him 3 in two days.

My favorite teams
 1. Portland Timbers
 1. Chicago Blackhawks
To be honest...I'll be very dissapointed in Makarov is not on the main squad come opening day.
Really curious who played goal for those seven goals.

Edit: Apparently it was Turco in net... I'd be curious to see what people that were there thought about the goals he let in.
Not all seven.... LOL

The goalies who played were Crawford (Who looked great), Turco, Palmer and Richards. If I forgot any others, then I must have been asleep.

Turco let in a softie, sure. But, as some have said.... Its the preseason. I'll take it a step further: It's training camp. This is when you let all the cobwebs go. The vacations are over and the season is about to start. It takes time to gel together as a team, and this is the best time to get prepared. For what its worth, seeing Turco live and all, I'm very impressed from what I saw of him. He had a couple of beautiful saves, and he looked very confident in net.

I heard some good things about Bickell today. Playing with Kane and Sharp, and then Kuc mentions it in his article. I thought Bickell played in that role well the small amount of time he received last year.

No surprise on Kane as he's been working on several things on the ice for the past 5-6 weeks.

Funny we lost 9 players and still seem to have massive depth.

Gotta love it!

Our depth is ridiculous... It really is. We still haven't cleared our logjam at winger, to be honest.

Still probably a bit short at Center but other than that, I don't see a position we are weak in right now. And like you said if something happens at Wing, depending on the Wing, there's still competition for that call up.

Teams going to surprise a lot of those folks that were writing them off during July-Aug, of even a chance to repeat.

Vancouver who?? Really? LOL!

I heard they liked where Skille is Rex. Other than that he looked fine on Saturday. Skille's problem is it appears some of these other guys came to camp with their game.

Remember Makarov and Morin just played a 3 game tourney. So they are some what ahead of other guys in any "competition" on the ice. The games coming up will tell alot.

Tomorrows cuts should be interesting.

Skille looks good. I think what hurts Skille is, he doesn't have one really outstanding aspect of his game. Maybe his shot? Like Stalberg has blazing speed, Makarov has crazy hockey sense and what seems to be a ridiculous compete level, Morin has outstanding vision, Lalonde is a ridiculous skater, etc. Skille just does everything ok. Not necessarily a bad thing, and third liners make a hell of a living being ok at everything. The only question I have about Skille is his defensive game. Didn't get to see too much of that from him on Saturday.

Don't know if it's been mentioned here, but I read in an article where Turco has been working with Crawford on the side to help with his puck handling so that no matter who is in net the breakouts will be seamless from night to night. Pretty cool to hear.

There is an interview on BH.com with Crawford today after the scrimmages. He talks about Turco and puck handling towards the end.
